7/18/2006 4:18:47 PM    Motorola Q error: 0x85010014
I'm setting up my co-worker with his Exchange account via ActiveSync on

his Motorola Q, but this error (0x85010014) prevents it from proceeding

with a note saying: ActiveSync has encountered a problem on the server.

I spent an hour on the phone with Verizon technical support, but they

finally said that the problem was not with the Motorola Q but with

exchange. I've got all the mobile device settings enabled on the

exchange server but I still get that error code. I already installed

the correct root certificate too.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Well, here is what the KB says

A synchronization source, either Exchange Server or Outlook, reported an

internal error. Typically, this condition is temporary. This condition has

three known causes:

1) The initial synchronization with the device occurred when Outlook was

offline. To work offline, Outlook must be configured for Cache mode. To

quickly determine whether this is true, verify that the Work Offline command

is on the File menu.

2) Outlook is not your primary e-mail client.

3) Antivirus programs are causing script blocking. Script blocking against

Outlook prevents ActiveSync from accessing the Object Model in Outlook by

intercepting all the ActiveSync calls to Outlook. If a user turns off the

script-blocking feature in the antivirus program, users should be able toto

synchronize successfully. This resolution only applies to users who perform

desktop synchronization.

Installing ActiveSync 4.1 should resolve this error.

Try the ActiveSync 4.1 version. Remember the Q doesn't have MSFP / AKU 2.0,

so it doesn't support push email.

If you click on the error link on the Moto Q it should give a more detailed

error. One I am familar with is the Cert error. Please verify the error

and post back. Also check the Exchange Server event log for any errors. Is

Activesync working with any other phones on your network?

John,

The entire error on the Motorola Q is as follows:

<snip>

Exchange Server

_______________

Result:

ActiveSync encountered a problem on the server.

Support code: 0x85010014

Last synchronized:

None

Last attempt:

</snip>

The Exchange Server event log is clean, no errors or anything related

to mobile devices.

This is the only ActiveSync device trying to connect to this server.

Martin,

I'm not sure if I follow you. Are you thinking about transferring the

messages via USB and ActiveSync + Outlook on the PC?

I'm trying to do this all wirelessly via the ActiveSync Exchange

function.

Either way, I have ActiveSync 4.1.0 installed (on my pc).

On the Moto Q can you access the mailbox through OMA?

John,

I believe that ActiveSync uses the OMA (Outlook Mobile Access?) to

fetch the mail...

It can connect to the Exchange server (if I type in the wrong password

it will tell me it is wrong) but then I get that error.

Outlook Mobile Access and Activesync are not the same. OMA is simply a web

interface on WM5 to your users mailbox. Try connecting your Exchange 2003

through Activesync without SSL, post back your results?

John,

When unchecking to use SSL the error is: Your account in Microsoft

Exchange Server does not have permission to synchronize with your

current settings. Contact your exchnage server admin. Error code:

85010004

When the use SLL is checked the error is ActiveSync has encountered a

problem on the

server. Error Code 850100014

It does get to the point where it says "Synchronizing folders"

then fails with the above.

Sounds like you have a permissions issue. Have you tried resetting the

permissions to default on all Exchange 2003 Virtual Directories?

I just now got around to resetting the IIS Virtual Directories and got

a step further. The error now is 0x85010004, and it says:

Your account in Microsoft Exchange Server does not have permission to

synchronize with your current settings. Contact your Exchange Server

administrator.

I've been fiddling around with the IIS manager, enabling/disabling SSL,

etc... and it still doesn't work.
