SOS!!! I was hacked!!! My Windows XP won't boot!!!
Hi all,

You've got to help me out of this swamp.

I had noticed that my system was boggled by a few malicious adwares

residing in my Internet Explorer 7.0 Beta. Fully protected by Windows

Defender and Symentic AntiVirus, I thought I should have no trouble

getting rid of these malicious adwares which slowed down my system

significantly, especially they open up new windows in IE one after

another, making me very difficult to proceed.

The Windows Defender did notice something ...

XP SP2 Install Hangs
I've looked all around for anything on this. XP SP2 install hangs at

the point where the registry is being backed up. I've done a virus

scan, turned virus checking off, made sure bios is up to date, done a

registry repair (using Registry mechanic), etc. I've uninstalled the

SP2 stuff 2X now that gets installed prior to the hang. I've searched

on MS and IBM support. Any ideas? Install log seems to show it hanging

on something to do with the PCI system -- PCDoctor tests PCI ...

Removing Autostart Programs causes Selective Startup Screen
I found Tony Northrup's article and I am trying to remove autostart programs.

I followed the "msconfig" instructions and deselected just one program as

an experiment. I noticed that on returning to the msconfig general screen

"Normal Start" had been deselected and "Selective Startup" selected with a

square(!?). Nevertheless I restarted and got a message saying that

"selective startup is being used" (or words to that effect). Well, yes, I

suppose, but there seems to be ...

Problems since having to reactivate windows xp
About a week ago, i was prompted to reenter my activation key for windows xp.

It would not allow me to continue unless I entered it. Since then, I've

had nothing but problems on trying to get my computer to turn off. I usually

have to go into Windows Task Manager and start turning off processess until

my machine finally will allow itself to be shut off. I understand that

Microsoft had some sort of update file that had people having to reenter

their activation code to ensure ...

WMIDiag - missing files
WMI is not working (so are a few other things, but all related to WMI). I

ran WMIDiag and it reports 2 WMI system files are missing, and suggests I

recopy them from a working system. Trouble is, these files don't seem to be

on my CDs or on my buddy's computer that's working fine. They are

cmdevtgprov.dll and policman.dll and should be in \windows,

\windows\system32, or \windows\system32\wbem.

Anybody got these files, or is WMIDiag messing up?

Harddisk checks
I have recently taken over a network of 120 PC's all running Win XP Prof. I

noticed a badly performing PC and ran "error checking" from the gui. Is

there a utility that I can run over my network to determine the state of each

my 120 hardrives and if it detected a problem ask it to run the equivalent

of "Check Disk options".

Or am I asking too much?

Windows cannot start after CHKDSK, which now does not run properly
This problem only recently began. Whenever I ran CHKDSK, Windows was unable

to restart Windows properly. It would bring up that screen stating "We

recent hardware or software change might have caused this", and I would have

to choose the

"Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) Start

Windows Normally" in order for Windows to start properly.

More recently, however, when I ...

I need some. I have phantom Hard Drive Space!
I have windows installed on roughly a 17GB Partition (16.7GB), I am low on

disk space so I checked to see what all the files equaled in total disk space

on this partition. According to windows they only take up 10.7GB of hard disk

space. I only have a total of 3.33GB so something is going wrong, I've had

this problem before too and my friend Also has the same problem I believe.

What do we do to correct Windows and straighten out with a stern manner to

windows to tell it what is ...

Froze Computer
My computer freezes around a half hour after I turn my computer on. I posted

last week about getting a failure to respond on a rundll32.exe. I thought

that that error message may have something to do with it freezing. I have run

both anti-virus and ad ware in safe mode. This action did not help the

matter. I am half tempted, even though I am uncertain on how, to reinstall my

software.

Any suggestions?

Thank you - Matt

Windows Installer Malfunction
I had a drive crash. Got new drive and re-installed XP Pro. About a week

later started having problems when I attempted to install SP2. It would get

about half done then I would get a "Permission Denied" error message and it

would then un-install what it had done. I am the Administrator and only

user. I tried removing all firewalls, virius checker, etc. Same result.

Now the Office says it needs to be re-installed and the Windows Installer has

gone south on me. I even trie ...

Replacing system Hard drive
My current system hard drive has less than 600Mb of space left and I would

like to replace it with a larger sytem hard drive. Is there a way to mirror

or copy the current drive onto a larger drive and then use the new drive as

my system drive, without re-installing all of my software? I am using XP

Professional and have numerous proprietary programs (downloaded, no disk)

which I am not sure I could re-install otherwise.

what would be my best way to go about this?

Windows Explorer/I.E. Version 7
Ok, I have an IBM thinkpad that is only a year old, and I have system

fact that I didn't have much data to backup. Now I have better protection so

I feel comfortable installing more programs and such. Anyway, the problem

internet) slow WAY down. I come back the next day and double click the IE

icon and it takes 15-20mins for my ho ...

Defrag and Chkdsk issue not yet resolved?
I've read about 8 threads on this problem but none has come up with a

solution. I am trying to defrag a PC running XP Pro, SP1. In 3 years, it has

never been defragged to my knowledge. The user complains about slow startup.

When I log on as admin and try to defrag, I get the message that Chkdsk is

scheduled to run and I must run Chkdsk/f. Yet, there are no scheduled tasks.

On my own PC, same age, same O/S,I log on as admin and can run defrag with no

problems. Both PCs on the sa ...

repair XP/loss of IP address
Recently my computer is stalling when I hit reset. Because of this I wanted

to reinstall XP to see if I could repair it. When I put my disk in the

drive, I am told that the version I am running is newer than the one on the

How can I reinstall? Should I wipe out the new version and start over again

am not familiar with?

Also, I am continually losing my IP address on my PC. I am running a

Reload question after computer crash
WIN XP Prof operating system was reloaded after a computer crash which takes

me back to SP1. I now have 53 updates listed that should be downloaded, but

isn't there an easier way - like downloading SP2, then do critical updates

after that? I do not have a disk for SP2, so had probably done that ages ago

Update many PCs upon startup - how?
Hi.

I would like to perform an identical batch operation for all the PC

workstations on a customer's site.

The batch should:

1. Add some entries to the IE favorites

2. Add some shortcuts to the desktop

3. Replace some files in specific paths that are known in advance. (The

files already exist - it's an update operation).

Assumptions:

1. I don't want to bother the users. The ideal way would be during the

next re-boot.

2. I don't want to bother the administrator to ...
