Hi

Microsoft SharePoint is a web application platform developed by Microsoft. Launched in 2001,[3] SharePoint is designed as a centralized replacement for multiple web applications and supports various combinations of enterprise website requirements. It is typically associated with web content management and document management systems.[4]

"SharePoint" is shorthand that some people use to refer to one or more Microsoft SharePoint products or technologies. SharePoint 2010 products and technologies include the following:
  • SharePoint Foundation 2010  SharePoint Foundation is the underlying technology for all SharePoint sites. It is available for free on-premises deployment and was called Windows SharePoint Services in previous versions. You can use SharePoint Foundation to quickly create many types of sites where you can collaborate on Web pages, documents, lists, calendars, and data.
  • SharePoint Server 2010  SharePoint Server is a server product that relies on SharePoint Foundation technology to provide a consistent, familiar framework for lists and libraries, site administration, and site customization. SharePoint Server includes all the features of SharePoint Foundation plus additional features and capabilities such as Enterprise Content Management, business intelligence, enterprise search, and personal profiles through My Sites. SharePoint Server is available for on-premises deployment or as part of a cloud-based service offering such as Microsoft Office 365.
  • SharePoint Online    SharePoint Online is a cloud-based service, hosted by Microsoft, for businesses of all sizes. Instead of installing and deploying SharePoint Server on premises, any business can now simply subscribe to SharePoint Online to provide their employees with an enterprise grade solution for creating sites to share documents and information with colleagues, partners, and customers.
  • SharePoint Designer 2010  SharePoint Designer is a free program for designing, building, and customizing Web sites that run on SharePoint Foundation and SharePoint Server. With SharePoint Designer 2010, you can create data-rich Web pages, build powerful workflow-enabled solutions, and design the look and feel of your site. The sites you create can range from small project management team sites to dashboard-driven portal solutions for large enterprises.
  • SharePoint Workspace 2010  SharePoint Workspace is a desktop program that you can use to take SharePoint site content offline and collaborate on the content with others while you are disconnected from the network. While you and other team members are offline, you can make changes to SharePoint content that will eventually synchronize back to the SharePoint site.

As an implementation for SharePoint, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS 2007) is a truly revolutionary collaboration tool.

Just like any other Microsoft product, MOSS is relatively easy to install and setup .Most businesses think they can get a portal up and running without any design process.

SharePointBoost offers many rich web parts to make SharePoint functionality more powerful. You will find it not so hard to learn how to use SharePoint.

You don’t need to have any programming background. Try to make use of SharePoint web parts.

Hi,

Sharepoint is a browser-based platform from Microsoft that allows for easier, timely and effective documents management. In many cases, it can be used to facilitate business collaboration between an enterprise and the web. Once used in a business, it comes along with several benefits that every person going to use it will enjoy because it allows the user to gain access to a lot of information. Therefore, the installation of sharepoint in an organization enables individuals to easily manage their joint websites, eases sharing of information by people across boundaries, is independent and does not make reference to any form of technology, its usage is not different with that of Microsoft word and refers to many solutions based on the website. Sharepoint As An Organizational Platform

I will tell you in simple words

In large organizations with its branches worldwide managing different departments like document
management, approval, request for proposals would be tedious

With SharePoint its very easy to track a document that's in the middle of
approval process, whereas in ASP.Net you require lot of coding to develop

sharePoint has got inbuilt templates like for document managing you can have ready solutions for
approval and reject and tracking etc

You can create Sequential,State Machine workflows very easily and deploy to Sharepoint

Hope you got it

For starters, the name SharePoint is a solid clue — this software product is first about sharing information and secondly about finding and collaborating on information at a specific place.

SharePoint can be used as a web content management system for highly structured and branded corporate intranets or rich internet sites. And it can be used as a flexible solution for quick, ad hoc site creation based on out of the box templates.

SharePoint can be used as a records management system with rigid policies that have to comply with regulations. And it can be used for informal document sharing spaces to put content to be collaborated on in an unstructured manner.

SharePoint can be a business intelligence front-end with rich dashboards, charting and graphical capabilities. You can create an interface layer to a data warehouse that stores a wealth of information, surfacing it in a visual way that allows you to interpret and draw insight from your data without being overwhelmed.

SharePoint can be used as a search solution for sites in an intranet, documents within an organisation and business data stored in a range of different systems. You can use SharePoint to search multiple systems, surfacing the results in a single interface that will be familiar and easy to use for anyone who’s used internet search engines. On top of that, SharePoint’s people search capabilities can be used to connect to subject matter experts.

SharePoint can be  social networking product. If the thought of social networking inside a business scares you, it can be a business networking solution. It allows people to follow the work their colleagues are doing and keep up to speed with activities of shared interest.

SharePoint can be used as a project management foundation, providing task list and organisation elements so that people can keep up to speed. It can also be used as a portal for a full-blown project management solution using Microsoft Project. It can be used for formal projects or to allow people to collaborate and interact in a fun and informal manner.

SharePoint can be a framework for building line-of-business applications or for surfacing other applications. It can be used for business process automation and simplifying data entry through the workflow and electronic forms capabilities.

SharePoint can be a portal for surfacing existing applications or allowing employees to access information in a range of sources. It can be a portal for new, highly-interactive Silverlight applications. It can be a portal into the organisation for partners and customers.

SharePoint can be a developer platform, supported by Microsoft developer tools and its inbuilt extensibility features. Or it can be used to support no-code solutions built in SharePoint Designer, Visio or third-party applications.

SharePoint can be used to play rich media over the web. It can be used to store, manage and share rich media content. And it can be used to broadcast PowerPoint presentations over the intranet.

SharePoint content can be available online in document centres, records centres, repositories and sites. Or it can be stored offline in SharePoint Workspace to be worked out without any network connection.

SharePoint is available on premise or in the cloud. It can be hosted by Microsoft via SharePoint Online and BPOS or it can be hosted by a range of Microsoft partners with their own expertise.

SharePoint is supported by hundreds of partners who may have their own niche specialities in industry, geography or feature set.

It can be used out of the box or built on to turn it into a unique solution to a specific business need.
