\\server does not work but \\server.domain.com does

I looked everywhere but obviously not in the rot places.  


Some of the computers on my network can access \\server and others can only access \\server.domain.com .  What setting do I need to change and where for these to talk?


Windows standard server 2003 Sp2.  XP and vista clients.
