converting vs2005 application to vs2008
Partha Mandayam posted at Tuesday, March 11, 2008 2:57 PM

Does anybody have statistics of how easy or difficult it is to convert a vs2005 app to vs2008? Does it convert 100% automatically? I'm looking for something like lines of code vs time taken to convert.

When you load a Visual Studio 2005

Solution into Visual Studio 2008, the project and solution files are converted automatically. No changes will be made to the class files (.cs or .vb) because there won't be any changes to make. For most projects, the operation takes only a few seconds to a minute.

Does it convert 100% automatically?

Even VS2005 had a conversion wizard to convert projects from vs2003 but it required lot of manual changes.

You can not convert 100% automatically using any tool, as there might be some changes related to next release of any product and visual studio is no exception to this

Hence, use conversion wizard and convert and resolve the issues mentioned by the conversion tool...

vs2005 to vs2008 conversion
mv ark replied to Partha Mandayam on Monday, March 17, 2008 5:11 PM

I haven't seen any metrics but did notice nice experiences on googling for "vs2005 to  vs2008 conversion". I personally had a smooth & quick migration & I believe if you are targetting the same 2.0 Framework there shouldn't be any issues at all.

I think converting VS 2005 application to VS 2008 is not all that complicated except some of the issues which can be taken care at the time of conversion...unless it is a complicated architecture...
