You can install Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 using the Custom installation type. A custom installation enables you to select which specific server role or roles you want installed. Custom installation differs from the Exchange 2010 Typical installation type in which the Hub Transport, Client Access, and Mailbox server roles plus the Exchange management tools are installed by default. For detailed steps about how to perform an installation of Exchange 2010 with the Typical installation type, see Install Exchange Server 2010.

After you've completed a custom installation of Exchange 2010, be aware of the following important points:

  • Potential for simultaneous OAB download requests   After you install the first Exchange 2010 server in an organization, if you create a recipient object (such as a mailbox, contact, distribution list, mailbox agent, or mail-enabled public folder), it will have a LegacyExchangeDN that corresponds to the new administrative group for the Exchange 2010 server. Because of this LegacyExchangeDN, Microsoft Outlook will request a full offline address book (OAB) download from the Exchange 2010 server for each user in this organization that logs on to a mailbox using Outlook and using OAB versions 2 or 3. This could result in many simultaneous OAB download requests, which causes high network utilization.
  • System restart required with the UM server role   After installing the Unified Messaging (UM) server role, you must restart the system to allow the Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service to reserve the required TCP ports.

One to watch out for as it will cause the to fail any you will notice the following errors in the ExchangeSetup.log

[REQUIRED] The previous installation path could not be found in the registry. Only disaster recovery mode is available.
[REQUIRED] The previously installed version could not be determined from the registry. Only disaster recovery mode is available.

So just be careful not to put any exchange and check it any entry available in registery for the previous installation

Hi David,

I have seen your log. the problem you are facing is pretty common and I believe you are using exchange server 2010 SP1. Just check out your updates folder,UPDATES folder. Updates in the /UpdatesDir will be installed BEFORE the Exchagne installations runs.
Also, If you want the RU to be installed automatically during the Exchange installation, copy the RU to the "Updates" folder that you will find in D:\install\Exchange.

I believe it will work for you.
Do update us again.
Thank you
Anil

To remove and to reinstall IIS and Exchange Server, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for the version of Exchange Server that is installed.

Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange 2000 Server

If you have to reinstall IIS on the server that is also running Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003, you have to reinstall Exchange Server at the same time. Do this to restore links to IIS that provide Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and Outlook Web Access functionality.

This article describes how to reinstall both IIS and Exchange Server and to preserve the existing Exchange store.

If your issue seems to be with Outlook Web Access, try using the steps in the following Knowledge Base article to remove only the Exchange virtual directories before you remove IIS:
280823  Troubleshooting OWA when the contents frame displays "Loading"
If you run Exchange Server in a clustered environment, click the following article number for more information about how to troubleshoot IIS:
312395  How to fix an uninstalled SMTP service on an Exchange 2000 server in a cluster
To remove and then reinstall IIS and Exchange Server, follow these steps.

Step 1: Back up data

Perform an online backup of the Exchange store, the system state data, and the IIS metabase.

For more information about how to back up and restore the IIS metabase, see the product documentation. To view this documentation, visit the following Microsoft Web site: For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
