What is the difference between WPF & silverlight?when to use silverlight & when to use WPF?
is it true WPF is only use for dektop application?

WPF is for desktop applications- you create an .exe file when you build WPF applications. To run a WPF exe requires you to have Framework 3 or higher on your pc.

Silverlight is on the web. What you create is an application that can be hosted either in an html page or an asp.net page. To watch it from your browser it requires to have installed in your browser the silverlight plugin. Silverlight uses very fewer libraries than WPF does, and that's pretty logical because silverlight's CLR is in the plugin which is about 5-10 MB.

WPF and silverlight though use the same logic in development and the same technology.

There are many differences between these two: WPF is a high-rich component framework which is works for desktop where as silverlight is just plug-in for browser which executes for web apps at client side.

With WPF and SL there are places of direct difference however, depending on how you structure your user experience.

WPF doesn't have a URL based navigation scheme or a navigation framework, so you have to come up with your own UI framework to manage any sort of navigation model. I usually do this by having exactly one Window, and that hosts all my content in the form of UserControl objects, but you could use many Window objects.
SL does have an optional URL based navigation scheme and framework, which is nice - makes things simpler. However, you can use the same "one Window that hosts UserControl objects" model just like WPF (hence my samples are the same). What you can't do is have a lot of Window objects (which to me is no loss, since the multiple SDI interface went out of style in 1997).
WP7 also has a URL based navigation scheme and framework. I still use the hosted UserControl idea too, and that makes a lot of the code common with SL and WPF.

HI

The mostly difference is Silverlight is running on Browser and WPF is running in form of windows Application. Actually, Silverlight is a Sub Set of WPF (WPF/E).

Simply say, WPF was developed for Vista, in order to have some great user interface. For example, WPF support 3D features and you can develop a user interface with 3D like the 3D flip function in Vista. The rendering is supported by DirectX 10. If you are using Vista and has a powerful graphic card, you can render this brilliant user interface with no afford. Because all processing are being performed on the graphic card. For XP, WPF still works but with no DirectX 10 support. The processing will being performed in CPU.

Silverlight is a sub-set of WPF. It inherits some features in WPF but running in browser. The silverlight runtime now is just 4mb, so compare to 160mb of .net framework 3.5, it cannot inherit all classes from WPF. If you would like to deliver a Rich Internet Application (RIA), Silverlight is a good choice. Otherwise, for rich client application or call desktop application, WPF should be applied.

Silverlight is primarly focused on animation and media, it is not really designed to do more complex
and large desktop applications, you can do but it is not its primary purpose,
