SharePoint - Conflict between Designer Custom Workflow and OTB Approval Workflow

[Using SharePoint MOSS 2007] I'm using an OTB workflow for approvals on a calendar web part. User wants pending requests emphasized using different color. Created SP Designer workflow that checks a calculated field value to display new color. Approval workflow works fine until the SP Designer workflow is added, OTB Approval doesn't fire. It appears to work, approver checks radio button but Approval Status field still displays Pending although the color changes correctly???
