SharePoint - Problem with the sync between SharePoint and Active Directory

Hi,
I'm starting to work with SharePoint, however the server that I'm working with was configurated by someone that doesn't work at my enterprise anymore, and now I'm having a problem with the retrieving of information from the Active Directory that SharePoint does to fill and automatically create an user account.

Some of the data are retrieved from Active Directory and saved on the user account, like the user's AccountName, PreferredName, Department and Title, but all the other fields are not filled with the data that should have been retrieved from the Active Directory.

I think that this is a problem caused by the current configuration of the Server, but I don't really know where should I change to solve it. Is it really a configuration problem? Could anyone help me? I would very much appreciate if someone explain to me, step by step, how to solve this. Thanks.

This is actually a loaded Q.

At the first place, you should check the timer jobs like the profile synchornization that synchornizes sharepoint with Active Directory. Search in msdn to find more information about these jobs. 

Secondly, you can try the STSADM  commands and try a sync manually. I think "stsadm -o sync" is the command, but double check with MSDN. It's been a long time since I have used it, but should be available.

Thank you for the solution, but now I have another question. The syncronization proccess sends an e-mail to every person that exists in the Active Directory welcoming they to SharePoint? There are more than three thousand people in the Active Directory, and for now we are only experimenting the functions of SharePoint to solve some of our problems and needs... So if the syncronization sends an e-mail to everyone, it would probably cause chaos here. Thanks again.
