Microsoft Word - Review and comment Word 2003 protected-Form
Asked By Asif on 27-Jun-12 09:38 AM
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knows of a script or any way to enable Track Changes and Comments features in a protected Word 2003 form.
Your help will be much appreciated.
Thanks,

solution-
- On the Tools menu, click Track Changes.
When the Track Changes feature is enabled, TRK appears on the status bar . When you turn off change tracking, TRK is dimmed.

I create a protected form and tried your requirements. There is no normal way to enable track changes. But we can follow steps to achieve objective
(but for same we would need protection password).
1. Open password protected form from Word
(I used Word 2010 as I'm not having 2003 but you can get hint for same).
2. Go to
Developer ribbon tab, click
Restrict Editing in
Protect group. A right side
Restrict formatting and Editing window opens. Click
Stop Protection button in bottom.
3. Enter
password when asked for.
4. Now other options would be visible in right side window. Select
Tracked Changes from
Editing Restrictions group.
5. Click
Yes, Start Enforcing Protection.
6. Enter password twice for protection.
Now when you type or modify in form controls all would be tracked and would be highlighted by
underlining along with text color set to red.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Vickey ... but it would be difficult to educate users on this as this form has a journey to make before it comes back to me :)

Thanks for your reply Vikram. I will try your suggestion. Unfortunately, in my case, I can't expect the end-user to do anything as they just want to be able to fill-in the field and be able to see track changes feature work along with their comments. Thanks, anyway. I am just trying to explore an alternative to Word, however, I am not sure if any other application such as PDF would allow for users to have track changes and be qable to insert comment.

You don't need to ask your users for same. Follow the steps in your form , protect it and send or share it with all your users.

Thanks a lot Vikram. I did try the steps you have mentioned. Correct me if I am wrong so with this option again the user has to change the Editing restrictions from filling-in to Track Changes right? You can't have both the features working at the same time right without manually changing the Editing Restriction value and providing password.
thanks again for your time and help - it;s much appreciated.

Unfortuantely yes! We cannot have both the features working at the same time.

Word 2003 to Word 2007 Accept all Changes shown Word
I use track changes often. It tracks my formatting changes which are mostly irrelevant to the other side.
