I have a customer with several HP palm computers and a SBS 2003 server

running Exchange. We'd like to be able to read email from the palm devices.

Any pointers on how to set this up? White papers?

Have you looked at ActiveSync? I don't use it myself, but plenty of people

here can advise you on it.

If you just need email and not calendar/contacts, you could use a generic

IMAP client like SnapperMail.

Sorry, just noticed you said you DO need calendar/tasks. ActiveSync is

going to be your best bet if you can use it, otherwise you'll need to

spend money and look at something like GoodLink or Visto.

Pocket PC 2003. A little more about what we are trying to do: We have

several users that do NOT have a desktop PC that need to access email. In

order to keep them in the work place and not off in some office, it would be

nice if they could connect directly to the exchange server to pickup email,

view calendars and tasks. Using OWA on these palm devices isn't a real good

solution. The devices in question are HP iPaq 4355's

Clearly I don't understand. I was under the impression that ActiveSync had

to be installed on a desktop PC and then you had to connect your PPC to the

desktop to sync. If I'm wrong, PLEASE point the way.

Would greatly appreciate the links. Yes, they have wireless. Also, Pocket

Outlook 2002. Right now the only solution seems to be to use this connect

to a desktop PC and sync via the PC (at least this keeps then out of the

offices, but it would be nice to get rid of the pc that isn't needed for

anything else.)

You don't even need that. If you don't need to install a special cert,

you can set the connection up over the air directly in ActiveSync's

settings on the Pocket PC straight to the Exchange 2003 server. Same

with Windows Mobile Smartphones.

For email and calendar, you can hit the Exchange 2003 server directly.

For tasks, you would need to set up a desktop partnership with Outlook

on a PC using ActiveSync on your iPAQ CD.

With Exchange 2003 SP2 and Windows MObile 5 with the forthcoming

Microsoft Security Feature Pack, you can get task directly from the

server as well.

Ok, thanks. Now, can you point me to instructions on setting this up? SP2

should be easy (and needs to be done anyhow) but what is "Windows MObile 5

with the forthcoming Microsoft Security Feature Pack"? We can wait for

tasks, or just do them on the palm device.

Active sync with PPC 2003 and SBS2003 SP1 works very well for e-mail,

calendars and contacts.

It's reasonably straight forward to set up, in fact SBS2003 SP1 has wizards

that will configure Exchange virtual directories on the server and

certificate installation onto the PPCs for you.

The only problem I have at the moment is that Exchange SP2 broke my active

sync setup.

I'm having problems with active sync is using SMTP addressing instead of

user name if anyone can throw a life line..

I'm assuming your IPAQs have wireless (I should have checked!).

You need a cradle on a PC to set server sync up. From then on E-mail,

calendaring and contacts is via HTTP or SSL to your SBS server over internal

WiFi or Internet.

If I catch your reply before bedtime (its 2:30 am here) I'll chase up some

links for you.

Ok, I've gotten down to the point of needing to resolve a HTTP 500 error

when trying to sync the palm device. (I feel that I'm getting close here)
