2/13/2006 5:10:36 PM    Camera for Jornada 720?
Hi Guys,

I just bought a Jornada 720 off eBay, mainly for the keyboard and ease

of typing over a Palm type thing and I am fairly new to all this mini

techie stuff.

I have seen cameras advertised as being compatible with the Jornada

such as eBay item number 5864410292. What i need to have explained to

me is how a compact flash camera, or other add-on like maybe a GPS unit

can work on a 720 when the CF slot is an enclosed space under the base

of the 720?

The only thing I can think of is that a PCMCIA to Compact flash adapter

will allow the camera to work.

Is that correct or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Cheers, Steve

ps... before anyone asks, NO,,,, I am not the seller of that camera

getting some crafty advertising, lol

I would stronly advise you to use a real digital camera, or use a Palm/PPC

for such usage. Even if the 720 could do what you wanted, why bother? The

thing is like a brick and really only useful for niche tasks. For everything

else I would encourage you to use a modern PDA. Hey I use my Zire 72 for

images and have never looked back. Go on amazon.com and look up the Zire

72. Some of my images are there.

Or he could be smart and use a real digital camera or a PPC/Palm. My Zire

72 has a nice camera for web usage.

Why even bother getting a Jornada 720 to take pictures? The thing is like a

brick. Its only really useful for niche tasks.

Thanks for the info, guys.

So the camera would work in the pcmcia slot using the adapter.?

John... I haven't bought the 720 to take pictures.

I have a Minolta Dimage and a compact for that.

I bought the 720 for ease of typing and wanted to add the camera purely

as a workable gizmo.

That will probably work, though I think you need to be careful to get

an older card, not one of the new Cardbus to Compact Flash adapter

cards. The PCMCIA cards generally work with about any old device, but

the newer Cardbus cards do not.

Make sure than any CF GPS unit you buy is returnable, in case it's

incompatible. "The Jornada 720 runs Microsoft Windows Handheld PC

(H/PC) 2000 Operating System. This OS is a modified version of the

Pocket PC version of Windows CE 3.0."

I have the Pharos CF GPS and I use it in a Toshiba PDA. I especially

chose this PDA because it has both a CF and an SD slot. The SD slot

holds the maps. The Jornada also seems well suited to use as a GPS,

with the maps on the CF card. Be sure to get an external amplified

speaker if used in a car as a navigation device.

Steve.

You're correct about the complications of the drop slot CF. You would indeed

need to make use of an inexpensive CF > PCMCIA adapter and use it in the PC

Card slot. There are very few devices that will actually fit into the CF

slot whole, maily storage card, and there have been a couple of connectivity

instances. Otherwise, many consider the drop slot to be a step backwards

from the older models side mount.

Yes, I used to do that with a 680. I couldn't get the picture quality

to be very good though. One nice feature of the software was that you

could set the camera to shoot whenever you pointed any IR remote at the

HPC and pressed a button.

While it is not exhaustive, the HPC:Factor Hardware Compatibility List (HCL)

does indicate devices (including cameras and GPSRs) *known* to work/not work

with the various versions of WinCE on the HPC factor. If you have found a

device which you have determined does or does not work, notify the editors

of HPC:Factor, as they would like to share your findings with the rest of

the community.

You may view the HCL here:

I hope this resource will be of service to you,
