Hello,

Yes, you can establish a TCP/IP connection on your Windows Mobile device via

Ethernet or WiFi.

That said, once you establish your Windows Mobile device on your network, I

would suggest using Resco File Explorer to access the shares and/or map the

network drive. It is a terrific little application for these kinds of

things. You can get more info on it at http://www.resco.net.

using the built in file explorer, tap the "open" icon at the bottom of

the screen.

You will need to manually enter the name of the computer with the share,

but once connected, you can then browse that computer's shares.

As Clinton mentioned, you cannot directly "open" files on the share

using the ppc's file explorer, but you can copy files to and from the share.

I have been using ActiveSync to transfer data between my PC and Pockey

PC. Can I use an Ethernet connection through TCP/IP similar to using

Terminal Services client?

Thanks in Advance

as Clinton also Noted, Look into Resco file Explorer. will give you the

"tree" explorer you are looking for as well as the option to map network

drives and open files directly from a network share. (i.e. images, text,

mp3's movies, etc...)

If you want to wait until Monday, I will have a review of Resco File

Explorer 2005 up on my site then. About 90% complete at this point.

Killer App (highly overused term) in my opinion...

impart:

[snip]

It hardly seems worth it, for me at least. It would be nice to view

images or text files for example without the need for copying them.

When I click the Explore button in Active Sync 3.8 a standard Windows

Explorer window opens. It has no 'tree' panel on the left. If I

double-click a folder on my ipaq 4700 my Explorer replacement (the

excellent Directory Opus) opens up - but without a 'tree' panel on the

left.

I can start Directory Opus normally and then expand the entry for

Mobile Device and get my full customised view - but I still can't open

files that are plainly visible.

Thus I've learnt that there are limitations imposed by the ipaq's OS.

9/29/2005 4:13:00 PM    Re: Using Pocket PC 2003 to access shares on my PC
I can't get what you suggest to work. My Pocket PC wants to create a VPN

connection when I try and access a shared folder on my home PC (peer to peer

based on my ethernet DSL router/switch). Surely a VPN isn't necessary if I

only want to access shares on my internal LAN.

I've got the PocketPC connecting to the Internet by a WiFi connection to my

DSL Router/Access Point and that works fine. Surely my PocketPC is on the

LAN side of the router, so I can't see why it is nessary to go in via VPN.

In any case I have tried to set up a VPN connection on the Pocket PC and it

doesn't work (though I assume I am not configuring it correctly).

Be glad of any hints you could offer....

have you got your network connection set to 'Internet' rather than 'Work'?

if you have, the PPC will try and route everything out - even wouldbe

connections to a local pc.

a so-called 'Work' connection will connect to 'internal' destinations and

also to the Internet provided you tick the little box which tells it that it

can.

Bob

Is there any chance you could talk me slowly through setting this up (or

point me at a SIMPLE tutorial that will do the job).

I have changed the options under Network Management, both to read "My Work

Network" (the first one had been set to "My ISP"); now I can't connect to

the Internet and also can't access my local PC.

Duh!

Start -> Settings -> System -> Wireless networks, then either select the

existing one (if it exists) or 'Add New..' if it doesn't.

(to remove an unwanted one or start afresh, tap and hold the connection,

then select 'Remove settings')

Network name=name of your WiFi (- it's SSID)

Connects to=Work

Device to device=not ticked

At the bottom, tap 'Network Key' tab

Authentication=whatever you use (mine=WPA-PSK); could also be Open,Shared or

WPA

Data encryption=whatever you use (mine=TKIP); could be WEP

Key is provided automatically=not ticked

Network key field=your key/password

Key index=1

At the bottom, tap '802.1x' tab

Use IEEE ...=ticked (default setting)

EAP type=Smart card (default setting)

Go back to Start -> Settings -> System tab -> Network Cards

Tap 'Network adapters' tab at bottom

My network card connects to=Work

Select IEEE802.11b WLAN Adapter

Tick either 'server-assigned' (it gets its IP number from router) or 'Use

specific IP' and enter what you need for IP, mask and gateway.

Go to 'Name servers' tab at bottom

If it gets DNS from router or some other DHCP source, no need to enter

anything.

If it doesn't, you must enter something for DNS or the Internet will never

work: you could try leaving it blank for now.

Later on, if you always get 'Host not found' or similar when trying the

internet, you may need to come back to this page and enter either your

router's IP address or that of your ISP's DNS server.

Tap 'OK' 3 times.

Finally, Start -> Settings -> Connections

Tap 'Set up my proxy' server line

Tick 'This network connects to the Internet' and click OK.

Tap OK twice; exit from 'Settings'

Try a soft reset at this point and then try network.

(Hope I got everything in the right order above; my connection is already

working, so I just looked at the tabs in turn)

Bob

I have set things up following your instructions. When I try to acess the

Internet it says I must set up a Proxy and when I try and access a share on

my desktop it says, network path not found.

I must still be missing one vital small detail
