Rubbish indeed. I always wonder what the AS programmer folks think what a
proper backup/restore routine should consist of. Have these guys never
have to restore a unit themselves? Useability seems to be over their head.
I guess they all must use Palms to avoid their own software :)
Adding to the response of Chris, which no doubt has solved your problems,
it is the prime example why you never should backup with ActiveSync. Only
use ActiveSync when you're out of options, as it's the greatest liablity
in using your Pocket PC.
Use Sprite Backup (iPAQ Backup) instead, which comes preinstalled with
your unit, and is a _gem_. Set it to selfrestoring headers and backup to a
card, probably saving the last three or four backups. A backup - depending
on your iPAQ main memory content - will take about a minute to two
minutes.
In case of data loss it will do what a decent backup program should do:
have you up and running in a minimum of time. What you have to reset after
a restore with Sprite are things like time, options like "lock buttons
when power off" and "enable clear type" in the setup, but apart from that
just click 'n' restore.
Also remember that the tiny NiMH backup battery will unload very fast, and
keep the unit under steam just for a short time, basically only to switch
battery packs - not to keep the unit without main power for hours. Take
care to secure the battery pack and check every now and then if it's still
tightly secured.
You could also consider a case to protect your PPC when carrying around
and avoid the problem (if that was the proble, of course) Have a look at
Piel Frama cases; I use an decently priced aluminum one for my 4700 (with
belt clip) and are most satisfied with it.
