12/29/2005 4:51:36 PM    Redirecting folders policy?
Hi,

Trying to redirect the My Documents folders, thought I had it working but

now realize it only works for some.

Here's what I've set:

Setting: Basic (Redirect everyone's folder to the same location)

Path: \\%HOMESHARE%%HOMEPATH% (set Target folder location to: Redirect to

the user's home directory)

Grant user exclusive rights to My Documents: Disabled

Move the contents of My Documents to the new location: Disabled

Policy Removal Behavior: Leave contents

Do not automatically make redirected folders available offline: Enabled

GPO Status: Enabled

Linked OU: container with all the user records

Security Filtering: Authenticated Users

This works for some of my users but not all and I get the following

application event errors:

Event ID: 101

Source: Folder Redirection

Description: Failed to perform redirection of folder My Documents. The new

directories for the redirected folder could not be created. The folder is

configured to be redirected to \\%HOMESHARE%%HOMEPATH%, the final expanded

path was \\%HOMESHARE%%HOMEPATH%. The following error occured:

The specified path is invalid.

Event ID: 1000

Source: Userenv

Description:

The Group Policy client-side extension Folder Redirection was passed flags

(0) and returned a failure status code of (161).

Event ID: 1000

Source: Userenv

Description:

Windows cannot process extension Folder Redirection ProcessGroupPolicy.

Return value (0xa1)

I don't know, I've been all over the system looking at folder rights and

user properties. Everything looks good but some how isn't working. Any

theories?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Linn

You need to specify a UNC-path. Environmental variables won't work:

Thanks for the response Florian. Guess I'm still confused. When I edit the

policy, on the My Documents Properties page, on the Target tab I set the

setting as "Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location". The

Target Folder Location is set to "Redirect to the user's home directory". I

don't see a place where I can specify a UNC-path. The environment variables

I reported from the event log are put there by Windows, not me.

From the KB article you sent me I don't know how I'd set this up then. In

my account properties, on the Profile tab I set home folder to Connect: H:

To: \\servername\username$. A hidden share of the users home directory.

The article suggests setting the policy to \\servername\sharename but I

don't see how I can do this when all of my users have unique share names.

What am I missing?

Thanks,

If you select "Create a folder for each user in the path" (or s.th.

equivalent to that) instead of "Redirect to the users' home directory",

you can specify a UNC-path, where windows shall put the files.

If I remember this right, windows creates the full path itself. If you

type "\\servername\share$" it should say something like: "Example:

\\servername\share$\Fred\My Documents". (Sorry, I have only got a german

windows).

You could try to redirect all the user's folders to

"\\servername\share$", where the user's homedirectories lie and let

windows create the subfolders ("..\Fred\My Documents").

cheers,

I was afraid you were going to suggest this. My main concern with this

approach is that this system was setup before I started working here. I'm

not 100% sure that all the usernames match their home directory names. Or

maybe that doesn't matter? Is Windows smart enough to map that correctly?

I'm mostly worried that I have missmatched user name and home directory

folder names, you know in the case were someone gets married or divorced.

Thanks,
