Pierre, setting the W2k3 domain in native mode means that you cannot

have NT4 BDCs, but doesn't affect your ability to access resources in

the NT4 domain or NT4 servers.

Hope that helps.

Greetings all!

I am currently working on our NT4 Domain to W2K3 AD Domain migration

project and will be using ADMT3. I have all the necessary things set up

such as trust relationships (2-way), etc. I am now trying to do a trial

migration of one of our NT4 global groups using the Group Account

Migration Wizard. However after selecting the Domains and servers I get

the following message:

THE TARGET DOMAIN IS NOT NATIVE MODE.

Does that mean that I must set my W2K3 AD domain to native mode?

Once I set the W2k3 AD domain to native mode would I still be able to

access my NT4 Domain server via the current 2-way trust relationship?

What should I set the Domain Funtional Level to? Windows 2000 native or

Windows Server 2003?

Would a migrated user still be able to access both his/her data on the

NT4 Domain server and W2K3 AD server?

I understand that member servers still in the NT4 domain would not be

able to be accessed via the W2K3 AD domain running in native mode?

I would appreciate comments re above. In future I shall be posting more

queries as I continue working on the migration project!

Thanks

Pierre

Hello Pierre,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

First of all, I'd like to thanks Emilio for his kindly notifications.

Actually, if you have set Windows 2003 domain with native mode, you cannot

have Windows NT 4 BDCs existing. However, it will not affect that you can

access the resources in Windows NT4 domain or Windows NT4 servers.

As far as I know, in Windows Server 2003, the functional level of a domain

or forest defines the set of advanced Windows Server 2003 Active Directory

features that are available in that domain or forest. The functional level

of a domain or forest also defines the set of Windows operating systems

that can run on the domain controllers in that domain or forest.

For more information about Windows Server 2003 Domain Functional Levels,

please refer to the following article that should be helpful:

Hope that helps!
