1/9/2006 2:31:25 PM    Exchange recovery storage groups
Hiya !

I don't think I ve quite got the hang of the Exchange recovery storage

group feature.

I don't understand if I have to create an RSG now just in case my Exchange

database crashes one day

(as a precautionary procedure that allows me to repair)

or

Can I install an RSG if and when my Exchange crashes and use it then to

restore a broken base.

(as part of the repair procedure).

Thanks

M.W.

HI Wazaru,

Welcome to SBS newsgroup.

Issue description:

===============

I understand that you want to know more exactly about the RSG function on

the Exchange restore process.

Analyzing and suggestion:

================

Generally speaking, the RSG should be used in the restore process, and the

recovery storage group did not store any backup information, it just try to

restore the mailbox from a good backup. For your convenience, I suggest you

refer to the article below, it should be helpful for you to understand more

clearly about backup and restore Exchange database.

823176 HOW TO: Recover or Restore a Single Mailbox in Exchange Server 2003

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=823176

Backup: If you do not have a good backup of your original server, please

follow the backup steps to backup the server data.

1.	Open ''''Exchange System Manager'''', navigate to

''''Servers''''\<Server Name>\''''First Storage Group''''\''''Mailbox

Store''''. Right-click it and choose ''''Properties''''. In the properties

window, click ''''database'''' tab. Write down the path of the database

file and streaming file. Also check the path of the public folder database

files.

2.	Open ''''Services'''' console in ''''Administrative Tools''''. Stop

''''Microsoft Exchange Information Store'''' service. If the exchange

database files are stored in the default path (c:\program

files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\), open Windows Explorer, navigate to the Exchange

database folder, and then save the .edb files and .stm files to a folder on

another disk partition or a shared folder on a internal workstation

Restore:

1.	Create new user accounts (duplicate the original accounts) by using Add

Users Wizard.

2.	Open Services Console, stop ''''Microsoft Exchange Information Store''''

service. Open ''''Exchange System Manager'''', navigate to

''''Servers''''\<Server Name>\''''First Storage Group''''. Right-click it

and choose ''''Properties''''. Select the database folder. (The original

database files should be copied to this folder).

3.	Open Exchange System Manager. Navigate to ''''Servers''''\<Server

Name>\''''First Storage Group''''\''''Mailbox Store''''. Right-click it and

choose ''''Properteis''''. Click ''''Database'''' tab and check ''''This

database can be overwritten by a restore'''' option. Also check this option

for ''''Public folder store''''.

4.	Open Services console, start ''''Microsoft Exchange Information

Store'''' service. In Exchange System Manager console, right-click

''''Mailbox store'''' and choose ''''Mount Store''''. Also mount the public

folder store.

5.	In Exchange System Manager Console, expand ''''Mailbox Store''''.

Right-click ''''Mailboxes'''' folder and choose ''''Run Cleanup Agent''''.

After doing this, you will see the mailboxes with red crosses in the right

panel. Right-click each mailbox and choose ''''Reconnect''''. Connect the

mailboxes to the current user accounts.

If you just want to migrate the mailbox on the old server to the new one,

you can follow use the exmerge to do the migration, it should be more

helpful to your situation, you can refer to the article below:

To use Exmerge, please visit:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=429163ec-dcdf-47dc-

You can also use the migration wizard migrate the mailbox from other

Exchange server; please refer to the following article for more information:

328871 How to use the Exchange Migration Wizard to migrate mailboxes from an

Server

Hope the above information helpful to your issue; please feel free to let

me know the results. I am glad to be of further assistance.

1/10/2006 12:48:21 PM    Re: Exchange recovery storage groups
Hold it. Hold it. !

Have you got some kind of robot answering messages now ?

What I want to know is -----

What is the RSG like ? How should I picture it ?

Is it like a safe store that Exchange will try to populate all the time with

copies of the mailboxes?

A kind of backup "place" ? That will allow me to go and ressurect clean

usable copies of my mailboes if the original ones get damaged?

or is it some kind of empty place that I can use if I want to restore from a

tape?

or is it still something else ?

Thanks,

Garret

1/11/2006 1:15:14 AM    Re: Exchange recovery storage groups
HI Garret,

Thanks for updates.

Let me clarify it more clearly, generally speaking the RSG should be

function to recovery the mailbox store or Exchange database, but itself did

not store any information for Exchange database, it will restore the

mailbox database from the full Exchange backup. You need to make sure that

you make a full back of Exchange database, then you can use RSG to recover

your mailbox.

Hope this helpful to your issue.
