for long answer: google this group for answers to this common problem. (IE7
hangs saying connecting )

Short answer, run IE7 with addons disabled. Turn them back on until you find
the one that causes the problem.

Live messenger may be a different problem.

The wonderful Catch-22 of this situation is that you can't run the Add-on
Manager when running IE7 with add-ons disabled! At least we couldn't, which
led to a lot of laughter.

BUT, we were able to run Add-on manager in a "locked up" or "hung up" IE7
window, and fix the problem, even though we had to end the Iexplorer task via
Ctrl-Alt-Del and the Tasklist!

So, good luck to you,

You can get there from here, but you need a detour.

Right click on the Internet icon in the start menu, select internet
properties instead of browse the internet.
