Vista OEM, will it install as an Upgrade over WinXP Pro Retail

Please, I'm not trying to be a smart ass but I am looking for a
factual answer, if possible, and not speculation or "I think" type
answers that seem to plague this board. THE QUESTION IS:

If I buy Vista Ultimate OEM from a company like NewEgg for $199, will
I be able to install it as an UPGRADE over my existing WinXP Pro Full
Retail License (yes the expensive one)?

I am looking to install as an upgrade (not full install) if I can as I
do not really want to have to set everything up all over again.

Does anyone know "FOR A FACT", i.e., personal experience or
is there a WMVP that would know?

KDA:
If the XP Pro is updated to sp2, the upgrade scenario would work.
Things that need to be uninstalled prior to performing the upgrade are, AV,
spyware, Nero and other programs that will be listed during the upgrade as
conflicting. Performing a disk clean-up and defragmentation would also be
recommended prior to running the upgrade advisor to also check for
conflicting programs. Have a great day.

You can do an upgrade install. The OEM is the same as the retail Vista
except that you don't get any free support calls. You will need 15gb free
space on your primary drive to perform the in-place upgrade. I would also
recommend running the Vista Upgrade Advisor, uninstalling antivirus software
( some incompatable av software cannot be uninstalled after the upgrade) and
shutting down any running programs prior to the upgrade. If the Upgrade
Advisor finds incompatable hardware or drivers, uninstall before the
upgrade.

The answer is no.  An OEM version of Windows Vista cannot
perform an upgrade over Windows XP.  OEM versions must
be installed on a reformatted drive, known as a "clean install".
Only "Retail Versions" of Vista can perform an upgrade.

No, OEM copies are for installation on  a system that has never had an OS.
So you can't do an upgrade with them.


You'll need a upgrade version or a retail full version.

previous versions of Windows. That's all those of us who haven't tried it
know. As there are very few if any OEM disks out in the public the best
answer you'll get for now is probably not. A couple weeks from now it'll be

Please read all of the forthcoming information before reaching a premature
conclusion.

The previous folks that responded to your question have considerable
computing experience and knowledge.

Currently, you have received several responses to your sincere question;
which response is correct, and do you understand why responses often
conflict?


One reason, Microsoft does not provide technical support for OEM software
because the licensed builders and OEMs modify kernel code for implementing
the builders / OEMs own third party applications. Second reason, all
participants within these Forums are either users or volunteers, not
employees of Microsoft, hence, reason for the often obnoxious speculation
responses.

Not necessary for expressing the differences between all previous versions
of Microsoft Windows compared to Windows Vista. Also, the Forum response
conflicts did not occur until the introduction of Windows Vista, sincerely do
you understand why?

When a typical user installs Vista OEM software, will that user have the
knowledge for closing the open kernel door that was provided for licensed
builders and OEMs?
Historically, it is reported, receiving quality tech support from OEMs is
somewhere near a nightmare and/or a wish-filled dream, while communicating
with a  server network, not humans.

Your Post indicates that you are fully aware of the many highly un-usual
user induced application conflicts currently Posted within these Forums.

What do you think will occur as people begin using OEM software; with the
hopes of saving a few dollars, and then later must pay a considerable fee for
proper tech support?  Or, possibly later be forced for purchasing Genuine
Microsoft Software.

Easily, the price for OEM software plus the financial expense for just one
or two tech support telephone calls (if possible) could easily far exceed the
price for initially purchasing Genuine Microsoft Software, which includes
free technical support.

Considering Windows Vista is so incredibly technically advanced, today, many
individual IT Pros do not have a clue as for how to resolve technical issues
regarding Windows Vista.

It seems logical for believing when individual users install OEM Vista, the
secondary results would equal the proverbial Pandora’s Box containing
troubles and problems.

The above wil do one of two things, add to your understandable current
confusion, or, assist making a conclusion that only you can make for what is
best for your needs.
