Offline files cannot synchronize - Invisibl

10-Feb-07 09:24:01
I'm desperate now.
I have a recurrent problem with my offline files since I upgraded to vista.
Any file I create/modify while I'm offline generates a sync error "The system
cannot find the file specified".

Vista is the Client; the server is an XP-Pro. This setting has been working
flawless for over 6 months until the update.

During the last 2 weeks I have checked everything I can image, including
resetting the CSC database in Vista (that took some time to find!), EFS keys
perfect matching (including recovery agents.. ), rebooting both machines
uncountable times, and applying a special hotfix for XP (KB903891). To not
avail.

A bizarre symptom is that those new files are actually available (in Vista)
while the drive is online, and I can make copies of them to the very same
directory where they were originally created. These copies then appear in
both machines, synchronizing flawless (while the originals remain in error).

I also created new shares, and new synchronizations, and enabled/disabled
off-line files settings (with reboots several times….)
Any ideas ?

Offline files cannot synchronize - Shubhankar Sanyal [MSFT]

15-Feb-07 03:34:15
Hello,
Could you provide the following details, so we can understand the scenario
more clearly?
0. Was the file made available offline or was it an autocached share?
1. At what level were these files made available offline (parent directory,
share, individual file)?
2. Does this affect only the files that were in your cache when the machine
was upgraded?
3. Does this affect all the files you made available or only the bak file in
the trace below?
4. You mention that you are able to make copies of these files while online.
Are these copies then available offline?
Also, please add the "offline status" and "offline availability" fields to
your explorer view and let us know the values for the files in qeustion.

Thanks,
Shubhankar

Offline files cannot synchronize - Invisibl

Hi!

0. Actually, I tried both options and I got the same results.
1. As far as I can remember, not the parent folder that was made available
ofline, but a subfolder. Today I tried again with a file directly within the
same folder with same results.
2. No. I actually even reseted the cache completely twice. (Using both
methods, by disabling/reset/enable offline files and independently by
reseting it through the registry entry in the CSC service parameters)
3. All of them.
4. Yes
5. Offline availability: Always available
. Offline status: Offline (need to sync)

Thanks!

PS: both systems fully patched to the up to latest Tuesday patch

Hi,
Can you check if "New file 3.mmap.bak" is read-only on the server?
Also does the user have read/write access (for the file and share)?
In addition, let me know if you see any conflicts for the file in sync
center.

Thanks,
Shubhankar

The file and share are both read/write for the user. Also when working from
the client online there are no messages denoting access denied or similar.
Remember, there were no issues when the client was running XP! I know you
should clear first the "low hanging fruit". But, if you can please trust me,
please go directly to the non-obvious issues.

There are no other conflicts in the sync. However, sometimes I had conflicts
with other files, and indeed, I could only resolve them when I selected the

One more data point:
As I use the laptop to generate quite a bit of files offline on a daily
basis, I needed to find a workable temporary alternative. I tried then to
move the XP files to a Linux server running SMB. "I'm afraid" now I can
synchronize without problems, but the operation takes much longer. Therefore,
I think that there is some caching mechanism implemented by XP, and somewhat
this caching is getting corrupted when interacting with the vista client.

Thanks again!

Hi,
Thanks for working through the initial triage steps with us. I was trying to
get as much info as possible, so I could repro this. Unfortunately this
hasn't reproed for us. Would you be willing to collect some logs for us?
These would likely be in tens of MBs (I can point you to an ftp location.)
Let me know and I can send you instructions.

Thanks,
