How to troubleshoot install of IIS 7 on Vista (won't install) ? - Henrik

Tuesday, February 13, 2007 11:09 PM

What is the best way to troubleshoot issues with installation of IIS 7
on a Vista Ultimate workstation? I have managed (after several
attempts) to get the 'World Wide Web Services' group to install, but
'Web Management Tools' always fail. I need that group to load in order
to debug applications with VS 2005.

Does the system log the reason behind the failures somewhere? Right now
I just see the 'some features did not install' dialog, which of course
isn't very helpful.

Thanks in advance...

HA!! my latest attempt may have worked.

1) Uninstall everything in the 'World Wide Web Services' group.
2) Uninstall everything in the 'Web Management Tools' group.
3) Uninstall everything in the 'Windows Process Activation Service' group.
4) Delete everything that the system will let you under
c:\windows\system32\inetsrv
5) Reboot.
6) Install everything in 'Windows Process Activation Service' group.
7) Install everything in 'Web Management Tools' group.
8) Install everything in 'World Wide Web Services' group.

Visual Web Developer supports debugging web applications withoutneeding IIS, - David Wang

Visual Web Developer supports debugging web applications without
needing IIS, so you may not even have a dependent issue.

%windir%\IIS7.log should contain info of IIS7 component installation.
However, you are on your own to figure out how to use it; it's
internal data and thus not documented. But, it should be pretty easy
to read and use; we debug issues using it ourselves.
