Help: Control Panel corrupt - Axel Dahmen

Saturday, February 24, 2007 12:40 PM

Hi,

I don't know what happened, but when I booted my Win2kServer Development =
machine today, something crashed my Control Panel.

I've set Start menu to auto-expand the Control Panel. What it shows now =
is completely nuts: Loads of squares instead of letters at some entries, =
several "Administration" entries and four folders "Printers", "Tasks", =

If I click one of the =
while executing command." message box.

If I click the "Control Panel" entry in Windows Explorer or right-click =
Control Panel in the Start menu to open the folder in Windows Explorer, =
everything is displayed correctly and works as expected. It's only the =
Flyout version that's messed up.

I'd like to try to save my current account before setting up a new one. =
Is there anyone who can tell me which registry entry or file system =
folder I have to fix to get the Control Panel Flyout back working =
properly?

TIA,
Axel Dahmen

Hi,

I've set Start menu to auto-expand the Control Panel. What it shows now is
completely nuts: Loads of squares instead of letters at some entries,
several "Administration" entries and four folders "Printers", "Tasks",

If I click one of the "â–¡â–¡â–¡â–¡â–¡â–¡â–¡â–¡" entries or one of the "Administration"
entries all I get is a "Error while executing command." message box.

If I click the "Control Panel" entry in Windows Explorer or right-click
Control Panel in the Start menu to open the folder in Windows Explorer,
everything is displayed correctly and works as expected. It's only the
Flyout version that's messed up.

I'd like to try to save my current account before setting up a new one. Is
there anyone who can tell me which registry entry or file system folder I
have to fix to get the Control Panel Flyout back working properly?

Flawless. It's just my account that does show this error.

Thanks for helping!

Sounds like the profile is corrupt. If the profile is corrupt, you can
rename the profile(while logged on as local admin), then when the user logs
on again a new profile will be created from the image in \default user. You
can then copy over the items you need from the renamed profile. Copy the
folder contents not the folders themselves. When your sure you have all you
need, you can delete the renamed profile(s). Use the import function of your
e-mail software. Use the internet explorer export/ import functions for
favorites.

Is there no other way? This is exactly the effort I'd like to avoid.

There must be a folder or something where the Start menu's Control Panel =
is stored. Can't I just copy that over from some other account?

TIA,
Axel

No, it isn't that simple. Control Panel is a virtual folder.
