Display Driver nvlddmkm stopped responding -- FIX-- - Dwai

03-Mar-07 06:31:00
I have found and fixed the problem today. This is what appears to happen.
during the installation of the most current drivers 100.65 Vista, an OLD file
nvlddmkm.sys is copied into windows/system32/drivers and not the current one
in the install. As a result the new drivers are attempting to access a file
dated 11/2006 instead of 2/2007 ver 7.15.11.0065 which is in the newest WHQL
driver ver 100.65 vista 32.

Fix: Go to windows/system32/drivers and rename nvlddmkm.sys to
nvlddmkm.sys.old. Go to the nvidia directory and find the file nvlddmkm.sy_
and copy it to windows/system32. Using the cmd window (DOS box) type
EXPAND.EXE nvlddmkm.sy_ nvlddmkm.sys. When the expansion is complete, copy
the new nvlddmkm.sys to windows/system32/drivers and restart the computer.

Your computer should now work properly.

You will notice that any uninstall and reinstall of nvidia drivers will not
remove the old nvlddmkm.sys file and will not overwrite it with the newer
version. You have to do it manually. I do not know why this happens but who
cares as long it is fixed.

Good luck...

P.S. Concerning "could not open file...". This must be done in administrator mode - run as administrator.

i know how u guys feel...

i'm having the same problem and i think their solution is wrong !!!

i opened it up and it said that the file nvlddmkm.sys CANNOT be run in DOS mode...

which is one of the steps in the solution

that is the reason why it always says "cannot open file input" or something like that.

i'm pretty fustrated that i just got my laptop and it is having this problem =[

plz come up with a new solution because obviously this isn't the right one.

Just thought I'd let everyone who is getting the "Cannot open output file" error message the solution I found.

Vista is really tight when it comes to running things as admisitrator, so when you open a normal command prompt, you aren't set as administrator (even when your set to administrator for the rest of the system). That's why you get the message.

When you go to open the command prompt, instead of double clicking it, right click it and choose "run as administrator". Then follow the rest of the steps as stated.

Didn't fix the initial problem in our case, but hopefully it will for some of you :)

Ive been having this trouble also for the past 2 weeks, since I got this
computer, and have tried many solutions, all having no success. Im
running Vista 32-bit with an eVga 8800GTX with 163.67 beta drivers,
downloaded all hotfixes and so called updates, tried the rename/delete
old nvl... files fix, and the rest of the dribble im starting to get
really, really annoyed. To how far these forums, any forums, go back
this problem has been around for a bloody long time, surely someone out
there can help me. In the off chance that someone can here are the
nessessary system specs if it helps at all.

Fix: Go to windows/system32/drivers and rename nvlddmkm.sys to

nvlddmkm.sys.old. Go to the nvidia directory and find the file nvlddmkm.sy_

and copy it to windows/system32. Using the cmd window (DOS box) type

EXPAND.EXE nvlddmkm.sy_ nvlddmkm.sys. When the expansion is complete, copy

Hi, Tibery-OS
Open a cmd prompt and run the command expand /?
Ending an extension with an underscore character is one way of indicating
that the file is compressed and can be expanded. You have to figure out for
yourself what the underscore should be changed to, but often it is kind of
obvious.

When Tibery-OS attempted to siphon gasoline from a motor home parked on a
Seattle street, he got much more than he bargained for. Police arrived at
the scene to find an ill man curled up next to a motor home near spilled
sewage. A police spokesman said that the man admitted to trying to steal
gasoline and plugged his hose into the motor home's sewage tank by mistake.
The owner of the vehicle declined to press charges, saying that it was the
best laugh he'd ever had.

As a note, i tried the above method and it didnt work. I then proceeded
to call Microsoft up and they told me it was a bad video card, which i
didnt beleive.

So next i called up Nvidia, again they really dont know the cause
either.

So out of brute frustration, i opened my case, replaced all my sata
cords for the HD and move the sata slot from 4 to 3 (evga 680 sli mobo).
Next i replaced all my power cables to the video card and HD.

Finally, i moved the Video card from one sli slot to the other (8800
gtx, not runing in sli since theres no point atm).

Upon startup, windows reinstalled the drivers for the HD based on its
new sata slot. The video card was reinstalled based on its new pci
express x16 slot.

Two things happened. 1) I was able to finally download and install
those 2 cumulative windows updates for ie7 that were constantly failing
before. 2) i stoped getting the crash error.

I have no clue which single step (if any) fixed my problem. But i
figured id throw a heads up to yall. This thread helped me out, even
though the methods didnt work, it let me know it wasnt a broken video
card and i saved the 60 bucks in RMA'ing it.

Not on here to much, email my gmail if you want me to go over the
steps.

Here is what you need to do. Navigate to the folder nVidia by typing cd c:\drv\vga\nVidia in command prompt while running as administrator.

Then you can type the command expand.exe nvlddmkm.sy_ nvlddmkm.sys. Once that is complete copy and paste from the nVidia folder to the drivers folder.

And it should work!

I had this problem for a while. The file overwrite technique did not
cure it for me.

I'm not sure what has, but it has been months since I've seen it.

Patched Vista to SP1; updated nvidia drivers to 175.12; stopped my CPU
overclock; several weeks later, resumed my mild CPU overclock; changed
fans on my video card; changed fan profile on video card; added fan to
blow on MCH; modified case fan profiles.

So, I adjusted a lot of heat related items and updated some software.
Somewhere in there the problem ended.

Regards,
Ken

After a few days of nightmarish attempts to fix this; including buying a new, higher wattage power supply; adding another case fan and trying out different nvidia driver schemes I've finally found something that looks promising:

I jettisoned the nvidia drivers and installed the omega version. (http://www.omegadrivers.net/)

I'm on Vista 64-bit. Looks like I wasted some cash getting parts maybe I didn't need but at least I appear to be back in business.
