Software Distribution Service 2.0 keeps breaking IE7 - PattiWagen

Sunday, May 13, 2007 4:17 PM

I have a computer running XP media center edition. Internet explorer 7
keeps breaking. It cannot connect to the internet, even though Eudora, FTP,
and Netscape version 8 have no problems. Last night I thought it was an
update from HP that was killing it, so I disabled automatic HP updates using
msconfig. I did a system restore to the previous day, and IE7 was working
fine. The check point was "Software Distribution Service 2.0."Today, when I
fired up my computer, IE7 could not connect to the internet again. Again
Netscape version 8 could connect with no problems. When I ran system
restore, I discovered that "Software Distribution Service 2.0" had been
installed at 11:30 last night. I did a system restore to that checkpoint,
and, again IE7 started to work again. In looking over this newsgroup, I see
that there are some problems with connectivity and MSN. I never use MSN on
that computer, but wonder if it is related.

Have you tried starting without add-ons? Right click on Desktop icon and
select start without add-ons. Does this still occur?

Software Distribution Service 2.0 keeps breaking IE7 - Robert Aldwinckle

What is Software Distribution Service 2.0?
Is it an Add-on? If not it won't be blocked by Manage Add-ons
E.g. note that there are other known interferers which can not be blocked
that way, so the only solution may be to disable or remove them.

Good luck

I thought it was from Microsoft. Maybe it is from HP. I will check with HP.

After reading all the posts in the group, I tried turning off zone alarm,
and I could connect. After restarting zone alarm, I discovered that that
software distribution service 2.0 had changed the firewall setting for
internet explorer. I changed it back and now IE7 is working. I have
reported the problem to Zone Alarm. I have no idea what "software
distribution service 2.0" is. I thought it was from Microsoft, but it could
be from Zone Alarm or HP.

Thanks everyone for your help with this problem.
