Tape Deletion Fails - bkgunt

Friday, June 08, 2007 3:19 PM

I get the following error message when I try to erase a tape...

************************************************************
Affected area:	-
Occurred since:	6/8/2007 12:05:33 PM
Recommended action:	Add tape to the library, or to the drive in the case of
a stand-alone drive. Retry the operation after adding tape.
Run media erase job again...
Resolution:	To dismiss the alert, click below
Inactivate alert
Description: could not be erased for the following reason:
(ID 3308)
(tape resource) is unavailable to continue with task execution. (ID 24050)
************************************************************

I cannot figure out why DPM thinks that the library needs more tapes. All
the slots are full of bar-code labeled LTO3 tapes.

Thank you,

BKGunth,Can you check if your drives are mapped correctly into the library - Kapil Malhotra [MSFT]

Saturday, June 09, 2007 12:02 AM

BKGunth,

Can you check if your drives are mapped correctly into the library from the
Library UI? The same error will occur when there are no drives available to
carry out the operation. The drives are mismapped by incorrect serial number
reporting by the drives or changer.

If the drives are mismapped, you will need to provide the manual mapping
using manually mapping. In Beta2, we have added the flexibility for the
admin to specify the mapping of the drives into the library. Can you please
download the Beta2 documentation and look for "Remapping Tape Drives"
section in the Operations Guide document? Please let us know if this helps
you map the drives correctly.

Please let us know how things go and we'd happy to help you further.

Kapil,In the Library UI the tape drives show that they are part of the Library - bkgunt

Kapil,
In the Library UI the tape drives show that they are part of the Library
(mapped to them), also I failed to mention that I was able to do a single
backup. After that backup I started to get the error I posted below.

Datta,
I have a Dell power vault 132T the mimi port driver is...
for the library PV132T.sys provided by Dell. Version 6.0.0.0

the tape driver is...
dtapeW32.sys provided by IBM version 6.0.7.13

Thank you,

BKGunth,Are there any free media for DPM to use? - Kapil Malhotra [MSFT]

Monday, June 11, 2007 1:18 PM

BKGunth,

Are there any free media for DPM to use? DPM will use tapes only if there
are Blank or explicitly marked free by the Admin. If you find any
Unrecognized media which are tapes written by another application, you will
first need to free them from the Library Management UI.

You mentioned in your earlier post that media erase was failing. Can you
ensure that the media you are trying to erase is online and available in the
library?

Kapil,
Yes there are a total of 21 tapes loaded in the library. When I first
installed DPM v2 B2 I marked all the tapes as free.

I will verify that the media is online and available.

Thank you,
Bryan

Kapil,
I verified that DPM can see the library and that the tape drives are
available and (they look like they are mapped to the library). I followed the
procedure in the operations manual for mapping drives manual. The procedure
did not change the error messages I got when doing an inventory....

Bryan,Can you download the MPSRPT tool from the connect website and collect a - Kapil Malhotra [MSFT]

Bryan,

Can you download the MPSRPT tool from the connect website and collect a
trace for the detailed inventory scenario? If the drives are mapped
correctly without doing manuall mapping, please delete the DPMLA.xml, run
Rescan again and run the scenario using manual mapping.

Once you have the traces send me mail on Kapil dot Malhotra AT microsoft dot
com, so that I can create an FTP share for you.
