can't connect to bellsouth's ng server - ~Mike Hollywood

20-Jun-07 10:41:03
Hi,
I have a dsl setup in florida, and through it connect to BellSouth's
newsgroup and mail servers. I set up outlook 2007,
and IE6's newsgroup reader, in florida on the
bellsouth acct. where it works perfectly.
In NJ, where I am now, I have a comcast broadband acct,
and connect via wifi on this laptop.
I connect fine to the comcast acct internet wise, but,
I can't connect to bellsouth's newsgroup server through the
comcast account, and I can't send email via outlook 7 either. I
can receive email, but I can't send them via outlook 2007.
Because I"m back and forth a lot I don't want to change all of
the accounts, etc., each time I make the trip.
Is there a way to connect to Bellsouth's newsgroup server
via the comcast internet wifi connection thourh outlook 2007's
call up of IE6's newsgroup reader?
Thanks in advance for any ideas on this.
Mike

Outlook and Outlook Express are entirely different programs. You will get
better help in an MS Outlook newsgroup:

Hi Bruce,
I know, thanks. I only mentioned outlook because I call outlook express's
ng reader from there, etc. My concern is with outlook express ng reader.
Running outlook express and then the ng reader is the same as calling
it from outlook.

I'm not sure what the answer would be. Since I only use MSNews, I connect
directly to that server rather than use my ISP's server options. Sorry.
Someone else should have an idea.

You are running into authentication issues. Many ISPs restrict their
news servers and SMTP servers to their customers. Some require that you
connect directly via them. Others may allow access is you do a logon.

You'll need to check with Bellsouth for their requirements. What you
can try in OE at Tools, Accounts, News, Properties, Server is check the
This server requires a logon and fill in your ISP logon account name and
password. That MIGHT work.

Similar issue apply for SMTP. The exact error message that you get when
trying to send will identify where Comcast or Bellsouth is doing the
blocking (maybe both). You might be able to get around that with SMTP
Authentication and using Port 587 or 465 rather than port 25. Check
Bellsouth to see if they support SMTP Authentication. Check with the
Outlook newsgroups for how to specify that.

AFAIK, you can't access the Bellsouth NNTP server unless you are connecting
from a Bellsouth IP address. This is common for ISPs which run their own
NNTP servers. You might get better Bellsouth specific information here:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/ilec,bels

Assuming that you mean "MS Outlook 2007" (I don't know what "outlook 7"
means; it isn't proper nomenclature for an MSFT product that I am aware of),
you are trying to use Bellsouth SMTP servers from a Comcast connection. That
won't work. Until AT&T is able to offer you migration to "at&t Yahoo! HSI",
you won't be able to use any AT&T mail servers from off of their network.

Short of using a proxy on the Bellsouth IP network, no.

BTW, MSIE 6 has no newsgroup reader. That is a function of MS Outlook
Express 6.

When AT&T completes integration of the 9-state AT&T Southeast region with
the rest of the AT&T network, you are pretty much stuck with no access to
the former Bellsouth system from the outside.

You won't be able to access BellSouth's newsserver when using Comcast as
your ISP...& vice versa. (Just like you can't use a US postage stamp in
Canada & vice versa.)

If you spend time in Florida and "downa Shore", you'll need to set up two
(2) newsserver accounts and use the appropriate one when in FL or NJ.

Or you can access all MS newsgroups via the free MS newsserver in both

ISPs don't let just anybody use their SMTP servers. Is that a problem? NNTP
servers are treated in a similar fashion by ISPs. The "Internet" is a fuzzy
concept. There is no single entity called, "The Internet"; rather, it is a
network of networks, with each participating network deciding how access
will be accomplished.

I can't tell you when things are going to change with Bellouth; but they are
no longer an independent business entity, they are just a division of AT&T.
I can tell you that, at this time, the other AT&T NNTP servers can be
accessed from off network. I currently use 'news.sf.sbcglobal.net' for
Usenet access. I can get there from Comcast, or Cox as easily as from my
legacy Pacific Bell (like Bellsouth, a former RBOC now a part of AT&T)
connection. As an example, here are partial headers of a post from a Road
Runner connection:

The IP address in question is not an AT&T IP address:

Rumor has it that some of the changes will be in place around the end of the
year. I don't know if the old Prodigy NNTP servers had any southeastern U.S.
names; but those are the servers now part of the at&t Yahoo! HSI system. Of
course, you may not want to wait for the changes, or you may even be looking
for an excuse to switch to Comcast anyway.

once again, thanks for the info. It will take me a while to comprehend all
you said, I will study it some.

you made me laugh about wanting to sw to comcast,
no, that's not it. I set up the dsl in florida because it's cheaper. I had
heard about dsl but until recently it looked like it wasn't ready for prime
time. I would rather sw to bellsouth dsl in jersey, had I the option to do
so, than swith to comcast in florida. The dsl intermediate level of service
I bought runs about $35 a month and I get downloads around 160K
consistantly. Comcast, although the downloads are consistantly in the
250+K range, costs $48 a month for ISP service. For the price differential
bellsouth dsl is a better deal fo rme. I don't have a TV so i don't get tv
from comcast, only internet access.
