Vista Ultimate will not boot without CD\DVD

Lajayce posted on Thursday, August 16, 2007 9:19 PM

I have built a new computer:

ASUS M2N E SLI
AMD FX 5400
2GB RAM
2 Hitachi 250G HDD in RAID 0 Stripe Array

Installed Ultimate without any apparent problems. After complete, realized
that computer will not boot up without a Windows CD/DVD in drive.

Deleted partitions, array, and tried different nVidia RAID drivers, and am
getting same results.

Finally tried installing XP Pro, and I gett the same result. If a Windoows
CD is not in the drive during boot, I will get the NO SYSTEM DETECTED error.
This would indicate to me the problem is not with Windows, but probably
related to either drive or RAID drivers, but I am at a loss.

Can anyone provide some insight or direction?

Do you have an active primary partition on the drive?

Do you have an active primary partition on the drive? Do you also have an
IDE drive?

John,

Thank you for the inquiry. To specifically answer your questions:

1. Yes,, my striped raid array was set as bootable and as primary.

2. No, I had no IDE drive, but I did have another SATA drive.

I actually read abnother post where it was suggested to remove all but the
primary drive and attempt installation again - the thought being that Vista
was possibly installing the MBR on a secondary drive.

I tried disconnecting the secondary drive, and the installation worked this
time. I am now booting properly without the CD\DVD needing to be installed.

Thanks for the support!

Have you tried a minimal system with no RAID?
