Cannot install updates - John Aldric

I have a user who I just upgraded to Windows XP Pro from XP Home. For some
reason, it won't install *any* Windows updates. According to Windows Update
history, the last update that was installed was the Microsoft Installer
update last Sunday (August 11th). I upgraded him from home on Friday, so that
was the first update.

I also manually updated him to IE7 to fix a problem he was having with his
internet, and that worked, however, I can't even install the Root
Certificates update.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I will try to check back
here at least once a day.

Hey, John, I upgraded a client last week from a pirated copy of XP Pro
to a legit one & had same symptoms. The following fixed it AND several
others w/varying but similar sumptoms since then.
I'm no techie, but I read a lot last week when we were having various
trouble-symptoms after installing anew or re-installing Windows XP atop
itself.  Some cases had ~76 updates we could not install; others had ~95;
still others had ~ 36 and even as few as 9 and 4.
The following is something I tried after finding it on a ng forum. Hope
it helps others--if it does, PLEASE read other posts and copy/paste the
procedure in answer to them (as well as back here to let others know if it
worked for your symptoms or not), as since it was a simple fix for me, it
may be also for others.

in a previous email on this site (see Joe Medford - 8.10.07) - it worked.

1. Click on Start and then click Run,
2. In the open field type "REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL" (without quotation marks) and
press Enter.
3. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" message,
click OK.
4. Please repeat these steps for each of the following commands:
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL"......Good luck to all, s

Thanks. I'll give it a shot and see if that fixes it. He's got about 79 or so
know that his copy of XP was *not* pirated, as it was an OEM copy. Still, it
won't hurt to try. Thanks again!

John, this 1 instance was not caused by an earlier pirated version, I
don't believe. It's causd by MS-distributed problems with their updates, at
least in my opinion. Other installs of genuine XP Pro that I worked on
showed the same reluctance to d/l & inst. updates; also a couple of XP Home,
legal versions of course, showed their tails too! I think it comes with
brand new installs OR upgrades OR repair-installs--and I think it's some new
crap from MS, like added security or more likely added aversion to pirated
installs. s

Thanks. Once I registered those DLL files, all was well! Thanks again for the
assistance. I just wish someone from Microsoft would acknowledge the problem
and fix it! :-)
