unable to open more than 6 browser windows

Nicol posted on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 5:52 AM

After 6 browser windows are opened, everytime i try to right click to "open
in new window", the 7th window doesn't appear. Sometimes the right click
doesn't even work. I can only close 1 existing window to open a new window.

This happens occasionally. Sometimes it works normally and I have no limit
to the number of windows I wish to open. Hope someone could assist me in this.

I too have a very similar problem, the only difference is there is no magic

Playdis posted on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 6:44 PM

I too have a very similar problem, the only difference is there is no magic
number of number of windows or tabs that will cause the computer to freeze my
ability to right click or open new windows or tabs.

The problem is not limited to IE, rather when it gets to this state it locks
up any additional windows or right clicking in any application. The computer
usually works fine at startup, but after it decides too many windows are
open, I must then close one before opening another. This situation gets
progressively worse if I don't shut down at the first sign of the problem.
Eventually it will only let me have one or two windows open, and the right
click is crippled with any more than one window or tab.

As the problem has gotten worse over time I rolled my computer back to a
Full Backup image, from the first week I had the OS installed. It worked
fine last night, but today it has started doing it again. Now I'm down to
three or four windows total that I can have open. (It even forced me to
close down to two IE windows and nothing else in order for this popup
response to open properly).

I'm running Vista Ultimate with IE version 7.0.6000.16512

My guess is that it is a system resource conflict problem, but I should be
fine with 2gigs of memory and a Dual Core Pentium D 3 GHz chip. My weakest
link is the integrated video card which is "Windows Experience Index" rated
at 2.1, but I tried disabling the windows Aero interface and ran the basic
windows vista color scheme, but it did not help the problem at all.

Hopefully this is similar enough to Nicole's problem to help get to the
bottom of this... there's strength in numbers!

Thanks.

Hi,I am using Vista Business with IE version 7.0.6000.16512.Playdisc is right.

Nicol posted on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 1:52 PM

Hi,

I am using Vista Business with IE version 7.0.6000.16512.
Playdisc is right. I did a test yesterday and the problem is not limited to
IE windows but others, if I don't restart the system, the number of windows I
am able to open becomes lesser until finally not a single one can be opened
at all.

I also found out that some folders like My Computer, My Documents cannot be
opened. Applications like Paint shows a error msg "Failed to open empty
document".
According to the descriptions, I think I have the exact same problem as
Playdisc. The problem only occurs after the computer is switched on for some
time, not immediately.

Right now on the Add-on list I have:
- Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper
- Norton Confidential Browser
- Show Norton Toolbar
- SSV HelperClass
- Sun Java Console
- XML DOM Document
- Windows Live Messenger

Except Windows Live Messenger, all the others came in as default when I got
my laptop 2 weeks ago. Should I disable all? Pls advice.

Thanks in Advance,
Nicole

I have a similar problem with xp2 (5.1.

max22 posted on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 5:54 PM

I have a similar problem with xp2 (5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600) and
ie7 (7.0.6000.16512): after opening numerous tabs and new windows (I haven't
tried counting how many), ie7 becomes unresponsive. The only way to open new
tabs or windows is to begin closing them; but even doing so there comes a
time when ie7 and explorer become increasingly non-responsive, e.g.,
right-clicking on links no longer works, explorer opens without toolbars,
etc. When I close all VISIBLE instances of ie I discover--by using
taskmanager--that there is a hidden ie process running with massive memory
usage.

I have followed all the supercilious comments regarding ie7 problems and add
ons or malware; of course I have none on my computer and I am running ie
without add-ons (makes no difference), and all my drivers, etc are up to date.

Advice is welcome; I'd prefer not to uninstall/reinstall ie7, but I may be
forced to do so.

I'm having exactly the same problem, once I have too many openapplications

reto9 posted on Saturday, September 01, 2007 9:04 PM

I'm having exactly the same problem, once I have too many open
applications (not necessarily IE) I cannot open new windows before I
close some other windows or applications. As I like to work with many
apps and windows open, I usually run into this issue every day at
least once, and the only way to get around this is to reboot, as the
number of open windows is degrading.

I explicitly tested this on several machines and I have seen this now
most of them.

I'm running XP SP2 and IE 6.0.2900. As this problems seems to spawn
different OS and IE versions, it does seem that some other installed
program or IE add-on is causing this.

Here is my list of currently loaded Add-ons:

Adobe PDF Reader
Google
Google Toolbar Helper
Google Toolbar Notifier BHO
Send to OneNote
Shockwave Flash Object
Skype
Skype add-on (mastermind)
SnagIt
SnagIt Toolbar Loader
SSVHelper Class (Sun)
Sun Java Konsole
Windows Live Sign-in Helper
