DB server and FE servers need to be on same domain?

darrel posted on Thursday, August 30, 2007 12:03 PM

In the Pocket Admin's book it states "The database server must be in the
same domain as your SharePoint Server server, and its version must be SQL
Server 2000 SP3a or later."

In face-to-face meetins we had with Microsoft with our MOSS and network
diagrams in front of them, clearly showing that we are planning on putting
our FE servers on our DMZ domain and our DB on our internal domain, we were
told that that would all be fine.

Before I go back to MS, can anyone confirm whether or not they need to be in
the same domain?

A related question is that we originally wanted our FE servers on our DMZ
domain, but then another server internal on our own domain pointing at the
same data. The internal server was going to be mainly used for site admins
to access their sites and be able to add folks via the address book, since
the external server won't be able to see the address book. Does that
internal server have to be a part of the farm on the outside for it to
handle user admin tasks?

According to the Technet Article at
(Design extranet farm topology - Split back-to-back topology), you can place
MOSS FE servers at the DMZ domain and SQL Servers in your internal domain
(DMZ domain must trust the internal domain in this case).

Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the link. Once again, more contradictory MOSS info floating out
there. This should be enough for our networking group, though. Thanks!
