Depends on what parameters you used when you created the new site. Did you
create a new Shared Service Provider? A new web application?

I think i created both a new ssp and a new web app.. but i think the
end result was just a sharepoint services "site" not an actual
portal.. because it wont let me "edit content and structure", in that
tree view, where i can add/remove things from the main menu etc..
I went into central management (in the beginning).. chose create new
web application.. when that was done.. i did create new site
collection.. and i thought i was done.. but this appears to be wrong. |

All you should need to do is create a new web app and make sure you
specify the mysites to be someplace other than the root. |

I did this.. but when i goto that main page.. i see the logo on the
right and "sharepoint services".. it looks different.. there isnt the
option on the upper right to edit content and structure.. like before,
where i could edit the tree display directly.. removing and adding
pull downs and menu options |

Very confused.. i added the new web app.. created a new entry for SPP
for it.. did the site creation option..
Site is up.. but on the right it says "Sharepoint services" on this
one (the old one doesnt say this).
This new site doesnt have multiple "top" menu items.. the old one
did..
This new site.. if you click site actions.. doesnt have the manage
site content and structure menu admin choice.
The old one has that option and it lets me add menu items etc. It
also has other options related to content in the old one, that this
new portal, if it is a portal doesnt have.
I'm not sure what i might have done wrong. |

Also.. are there any limits with sharepoint 2007? maybe i can only
have one portal site per server? if so.. i need a way to have the old
portal site while i'm working on the replacement one. |
