Restore WSS 2 data to WSS 3

Neil Jordan posted on Thursday, October 11, 2007 4:58 AM

Sorry if there is an obvious answer to this one, but at the moment I can't
find it!

I have an SBS 2003 installation, so have had to do a side by side install of
WSS2 and WSS3.

Can I restore data from the WSS2 system into WSS3 in any way? I did a
backup of the data previously with stsadm

Thanks

Neil

You can *manually* transfer the contents of some kinds of Lists from WSS 2.

You can *manually* transfer the contents of some kinds of Lists from WSS
2.0 to WSS 3.0.

Because you can't use Save List as Template in 2.0 and then use that
template in 3.0 you have to create the 3.0 List to look exactly the same
as the 2.0 List and then transfer data across using DataSheet View in both.

I've done this with the lists in my WSS FAQ site (2.0) to a test 3.0
site. These are both Link Lists (for instance KB Articles) and Custom
Lists (WSS v3 FAQ). It's also possible to use the same technique with
Document Libraries by copying the documents Explorer View to Explorer
View and then again copying the rest of the columns by Datasheet View to
Datasheet View.

Unfortunately, most of the ones I want to transfer are discussions and image

Unfortunately, most of the ones I want to transfer are discussions and image
libraries, so I guess I have no way of doing this?

Image Libraries should be the same as Document Libraries.

Discussion Lists are likely to be more of a problem :) You could try
exporting to Excel and see what they look like there but somehow I doubt
if it will help much.

I don't have datasheet view available with Picture Libraries in WSS 3.0.

However, Neil, you can use explorer view. Have you tried the old drag and
drop method?
