Comcast, like many ISPs (who still provide newsgroup access), contract
out the NNTP (news network transfer protocol) service to an outside
vendor. For Comcast, that is Giganews. Although Comcast manages the
newsgroups.comcast.net host and owns that host/domain name, the host
is actually owned by Giganews. It is the boundary host managed by
Comcast for their users to get at Giganews' service. Since you are
logging into Giganews, they need to authenticate that you have
permissions to use their service.
You need to provide the e-mail address (username and domain) as the
username along with your Comcast login password for that Comcast
e-mail account. It must be your owner or primary e-mail address at
Comcast, not a member or associate e-mail account.
I'm pretty sure Comcast has instructions on their help pages on how to
configure OE for newsgroup access.

And one of them mentions Time Warner users. |

Thanks for the reply however the reason I came here was to see IF anything
in OE
could be causing the problem as I seemed to have exhausted
Comcasts Tech's ability to figure out my problem.
I followed Comcasts instructions per their web-site and have spoken to
5 tech's and one "forum" tech to no avail.
Comcasts last suggestion was to literally dismantle my system remove router,
drop firewall and
anti-virus, and IF need be uninstall and reinstall OE.
I think it boils down to Comcast NOT wanting to provide NG service.
Thanks

So, is GMcM now posting the same user as Xeno Chauvin that started
this discussion? Don't change your moniker; else, you are seen as a
different poster, and someone who is attempting to hijack a discussion
rather than start their own.
Before I continue, your login credentials specified in the new account
within Outlook Express are:
username = your primary Comcast e-mail address
password = your password for that primary Comcast e-mail account
Correct? If so, perhaps your problem is OE does not remember the
login credentials (method 3 in the article below).

You may need to get all anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware, and
other security programs out of the way to make sure they are not
interferring with OE. |

Mea culpa,mea culpa,
Thanks for the article that may be the problem since I now know I can telnet
to
the news-server and be authenticated.
