There are plenty of sound drivers, but you need to know what chipset you're
using as the manufacturer is responsible for making the device drivers. Once
you know the chipset, you can know where to begin looking.

Sound Driver for Window XP doesn't work on New Toshiba with Vista

Start with Toshiba. Do they offer an XP sound driver for your model?
If not, you'll need to research the specs for your model and find the sound
chip make and model, then search for a driver for that chip.

As you stated, I called Toshiba and they say that since my mother board is
for Vista Plus, no XP driver will work. I will have to find a 3rd party
software driver as they do not plan on resolving this issue. They suggested
still have my sight. 8{

They're probably misleading a little bit.

They're probably misleading a little bit. They are correct in that XP
drivers won't work with Vista. Since the computer was designed for Windows
XP, they don't offer certified Windows Vista drivers nor do they guarantee
that any will be offered. RealTek is the largest manufacturer of onboard
sound chips. In other words, if a computer comes with sound only on the
mother board and doesn't have a sound card, chances are that the sound chip
on the computer is from RealTek. I'm not sure if these are the drivers since
I haven't installed RealTek drivers in ages and definitely not for Vista,
you might try the drivers available here:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=23&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#AC

Also, don't forget to check out the Windows Update within Vista. There are
often certified drivers for various bits of hardware on your system
available on the windows download site.

You may have better luck posting these questions in the Vista newsgroups as
this newsgroup is for developer network subscriptions and not visited nearly
as often and more people in the Vista newsgroup may have looked for a
RealTek audio driver just like you are.

I may have confused you.

giantda posted on Sunday, November 18, 2007 2:15 PM

I may have confused you. I have a Toshiba which came with Vista and
purchased and converted it back to XP Professional as this worked with my
they didn't support XP drivers when the laptop was designed for vista.
I hope REALTEK can help, but haven't located anything yet. May need to
call them, when I find their Phone #,
Thanks for your help

Doh!

Doh! Sorry, got it backwards :-) Same things usually apply though with
regards to their talking about driver availability. You should actually have
a much easier time of finding stable XP drivers than Vista drivers though.
Realtec has had good, solid XP drivers for a long time.

I just bought two toshiba tecra laptops pre-loaded with vista.

I just bought two toshiba tecra laptops pre-loaded with vista. The one for my
customer, I wanted with XP. I found a Toshiba tecra XP recorvery DVD which I
installed and everything is working fine, including sound. If you only want
XP, ask your Toshiba dealer to replace the vista recovery DVD with an XP one.
On the other laptop I installed both vista and XP - dual boot. On that one
I have the same problem . In case you found a driver, let me know.

Is it not amazing that computer manufactures decide what OS system you have
to use ....

Good Luck
