Visual Studio 2008 RTM available on MSDN Subscription Downloads

David Hearn posted on Monday, November 19, 2007 7:39 AM

As Daniel Moth pointed out on his blog
(http://www.danielmoth.com/Blog/2007/11/visual-studio-2008-build-version.html),
Visual Studio 2008 RTM is now available on MSDN Subsriber Downloads.

The only edition I can find listed on my login is: "Visual Studio Team
System 2008 Team Suite (x86 and x64 WoW) - DVD (English)"

I had wanted to try out the Pro edition for evaluation - wonder whether
more editions may appear later? My subscription ends at the end of this
month, so came out just in time for me. :)

I was getting 240kbps when I made that post, now down to 70kbps at to
moment.

I wasn't sure about posting the announcement until I'd downloaded it -
just in case it affected the download speeds!!

Sometimes pausing and unpausing will get the download speed up.

won't mention that I'm hitting 780KB/s up to 980 KB/s:-)

From what I've read, it may, currently be Team Suite only. I think
they may be phasing in the different editions to the respective
subscription levels. Possibly to spread the load.

some point you think they'd come up with a plan to add bandwidth when the

You must use the Top Downloads feature to see it and downloading it.

Sylvain Lafontaine posted on Monday, November 19, 2007 3:52 PM

You must use the Top Downloads feature to see it and downloading it. Right
now, I'm
downloading the professional version at a speed of about 500KB/sec. (The
maximum on my line is about 520KB/sec.)

To see the Top Download feature on the home page, you must first login and
you must allow the pop-up on your browser (at least, temporarily). If you
still don't see them, go to your "Manage My Subscription", make a small
change to your preferences, save the stuff and then go again to the
Subscriber home page. Changing your preferences will assure that the Top
Download feature has been synchronised with your account.

You see it in your tree probably because you have a Team subscription.

Hi David,

I have looked up the subscriber download center, seems the top downloads
page showed other edition of VS 2008(include PRO):

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/default.aspx

Also, in normal download benefit page, you can find the following
comments(in the page download the VS 2008 readme ):

==========
Description
Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition is currently available as a top
download from the Subscriber Top Downloads section of the MSDN Subscription
homepage. Please go to the MSDN Subscriptions home page and select the
edition of Visual Studio 2008 that you would like to download. Note: The
Top Downloads functionality may require that you disable your pop-up
blocker software and install the download management control.
================

Sincerely,

Steven Cheng

Visual Studio 2008 RTM available on MSDN Subscription Downloads

David Hearn posted on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 4:24 AM

MSDN site is saying: "For a faster, more reliable download experience,
please utilize “Top Downloads” below. All English Visual Studio 2008
editions will be available here first. Visual Studio 2008 editions also
will be released—on a staggered schedule—to Subscriber Downloads."

So you can use the Akamai Download Manager (via Top Downloads) to get
every edition available to your level of subscription, but if you want
to use the normal FTM download tool (viewed through the treeview on the
download page), you'll need to wait as they're staggering the
availability of these - probably as a Akami is a P2P system, thus
reducing their bandwidth load.

The "Top Downloads" method uses a P2P system, thus improving bandwidth
(as Bob suggested) and the normal FTM method is still working, but just
has the editions available being staggered.

It seems to me MSFT has learned from the fiasco of down-loading Vista when
it was RTM. I got VS2008 down over night and the library this morning.

Well done MSFT!

Can anyone confirm whether or not Visual Studio Team System 2008 w/MSDN

gerry posted on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 2:41 PM

Can anyone confirm whether or not Visual Studio Team System 2008 w/MSDN
Premium for Developers is available for download.
I thought that I had seen it mentioned that it was , however it is not in
the list of available versions ( for me ).
I contacted the eOpen concierge and they confirmed that I do have a valid
subscription that includes this version.
They also said to give it a few days because the version had not yet been
posted for download.

I just wanted to confirm that this is available or not before poking at MS
again as to why I can't see it.

I'm seeing it on the "Top Downloads" section of the MSDN homepage -
which means you can get it using the Akamai Download Manager. I haven't
seen it in the normal treeview/FTM method you usually download things
from MSDN through - that, as they say, is being staggered in which
products are made available there.

All VS2008 products *are* available on the "Top Downloads" section though.

Anyone know where a comparison chart might be. I can't seem to find one in

between "Professional" and "Team System Development Edition." Aside from the
hooks into TFS, what are the differences?

I found one a couple of months ago on the MSDN pages when I was
researching for reasons why we NEEDED an MSDN subscription, but I can't
seem to find it now. The following link has a table with some
comparisons, but these are only for 2005 (unsure if 2008's Comparison
chart would even be up yet though, given that it isn't actually
released.

en_visual_studio_2008_professional_x86_x64wow_dvd_X14-26326.iso today,
but every time I try to install it I get a ready error. Guess my image
is corrupted. Its only available in the Top Downloads so there is no
SHA-1 I could check as for the subscriber downloads :(.

Thanks.

from comments i've seen elsewhere this seems to be an ongoing issue for VL
