MM2005 file disappearing!

Cal Learner posted on Monday, January 07, 2008 3:44 PM

There have been some people post that. They find a temp file of the
appropriate size. When they rename that temp file, Money opens it
fine.

Same here with Money 2004.
Taking backups very regularly until I get to the bottom of this.
I thought it was something to do with my machine - but now I'm not so
sure...
Anybody else?

Vista has some very strict rules about where you are allowed to create
files. If you do create one in a place that Vista thinks is off-limits it
will create an impermanent file.

By default Money creates the .mny file in Program Files which Vista doesn't
like. Move your .mny file to somewhere where you have full access e.g.
C:/users/Iain/Documents.

Now that I think of it, the events I was thinking of may not have
been for Money Plus. Follow Bob's advice for sure.

I am running XP SP2 with Money 2004 and the problem is occurring when
the money file is stored in a folder to which I have full rights. It is
also intermittent and I would have thought a rights problem would have
been consistent.

This has only started recently and previously Money was rock solid.

Iain,

I have turned off Money Express as an experiment partly because I can't
think of a good reason why I should run it anyway! I'm normally pretty
selective about what I run but this slipped through the net.

I don't suppose it will have any effect but the fewer variables the
better.
Just out of interest are you running Money Express?

MM2005 file disappearing!

Twice recently my datafile for Money has completely disappeared -
searched the computer, Recyle Bin, everywhere... Luckily I've got
various backups, so I've lost nothing. So far.

Computer is running Vista. I've had no problems of this sort for the
last four years on other OSs.

Has anyone else suffered this?

Thanks,

Iain

That was a quick response!

Bob - The file though WAS stored in my (own) Documents folder, but
thanks for the suggestion.

The first time it happened was about a week ago; I thought I must have
done something stupid, until it happened again.

Martin,

No; Money Express isn't included in the 2005 version for some reason.

I am running 2006 in Vista and have had the same problem twice in the last
week. My file is saved in my documents, so this is not the issue. What the
heck is going on!

I assume that you've already looked for a file with a name such as
~xxxx.tmp, and tried renaming that to whatever.mny. It worked for me
once when I started Money and was horrified to be invited to "convert my
Quicken file". Word etc create similar temporary files that get renamed
when you shut the program down cleanly, but tend to remain if the
program (or the PC) crashes for some reason. At lest with Word it will
notice and offer to recover for you...

And Cal doesn't seem to have reiterated the need to keep regular backups
(yet). I keep daily backups going back months on an external drive.
