By this response, I am supposed to infer that newsgroups cannot be replied to
in IE 7?
Where is the documentation on that?
thanx,

No, that is not implied. Most people have no such problem. That said,
after trying the Web interface to newsgroups I found it too slow and clunky
to use effectively and use either OE or Vista's Windows Mail now. |

That's what I thought. I am unable to use the Web version on multiple
machines in our environment that have IE 7. Before we roll this out for all
machines, I need to find out why, and what can be done to fix this if it is
broken, short of having to pre-setup Express for all images (which we prefer
not to do).
If anyone has the fix for this, I'd appreciate the input.

Why not use a real news reader for news groups? A news reader is far
better than a browser for this. |

Agreed. You (that's the generic 'you') can't take something designed for
the NNTP protocol and shoehorn it onto the HTTP protocol. Well, you can,
but it's not always going to work so well. You don't send a boy to do a
man's job, and you don't read news with a web browser.

There is more than one redirect, particularly if login is implied;
so your description isn't very precise. Try using Fiddler2 to trace what happens.
What happens then will depend on which case you are tracing--
with login prompt or without. If you are doing it with you will get an invalid
certificate message because Fiddler creates a "man in the middle" scenario.
FWIW what I do is get that message then disable the proxy; somehow Fiddler
keeps tracing the secure "tunnel" being used but we don't see more certificate problems.
Also, what happens then depends on various options, such as tab options,
popup blocking, security zone, etc.
Third-party popup blocking is the most likely cause of the symptom.
To check on that possibility it may be necessary to trace with ProcMon.
Hmm... something very strange was happening with both of my web interface replies
when I first tried doing some testing about this--for some reason none were being filled in.
I checked that Cookies were being both read and written--obsolete Cookies
which are sent by the browser are sometimes seen as problem causes of related problem
symptoms. But whatever it was was purely transient. I may have fixed it by reviewing
my Profile but I am not really convinced of that possibility because the change was not
immediate.
So,, if we're dealing with transient symptoms in one case perhaps they are in your case too?
E.g. do you still have a problem? <eg>

I sometimes have the same problem with forums at microsoft. And they can't
be read with a newsreader.
I delete all the cookies from microsoft (or delete all cookies) and then the
problem has been solved.
Don't know why this is, but to me it works.

Since I did not realize that you cannot read the newsgroups at microsoft
with OE, I used OE anyway.

Depends on which forums. MS has a lot of them that only exist in Web
versions. I don't go to any of those, they're too d___ slow.

Newsgroups like this one can be read by me in OE.
But there are forums for example
http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/default.aspx?SiteID=2
that I can't reach in OE. Or am I missing something? |

Then I must assume that you're referring to the Windows Live OneCare Safety
Center forums, which are not available via NNTP:
Windows Live OneCare Safety Center Forum
http://boards.live.com/safetyboards/board.aspx?BoardID=225
Windows Live OneCare Safety Center Forum for Vista
http://boards.live.com/safetyboards/board.aspx?BoardID=909
The OneCare (installed application) forums
(http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare) are duplicated by the
newsgroups I cited in my last reply.

I've looked again and I saw that there are on:
http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare
far more subjects than in the newsgroups. Also the Dutch part at:
http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=1344&SiteID=2
is not available in NNTP.

Since this discussion started, I've discovered that the NNTP mirrors of the
OneCare Forums (http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare) were
discontinued without notice a few months ago.
Glad you found your way there finally. |
