Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) install probl

In order to install Service Pack 2, the Windows automatic update system
requires that I install Genuine Advantage Validation Tool. When I try to
install it I get errors and I can't install any other updates to Windows XP.
I've tried to download SP2 and install it manually. Then I get the error that
sp2 is required to install sp2. What do I do now?

Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows
XP installation:

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.
