Fixed - Search Functionality for the IE Beta NG - KristenMSF

Hi all,
The newsgroup creation tool stipped the Locale off the NG when creating it,
therefore the search functionality has not been working as expected.

Good News: It's now fixed! Vistors to the IE Beta NG will be able to search
posts by title for assistance with IE Beta issues or questions.

Bad News (but not totally bad): The fixed search functionality does not pick
up existing posts. Any posts from 5/29/08 onward, will get indexed for easy
seachability.

Thank you for bring this to my attention and your patience while I
investigated the issue!

Regards,
Kristen

Doh... Good Catch.

4/29/08 is the correct date that the search functionality was fixed. This
is what happens when you work in development and are always planning for the
next release :)

Thank you - Kristen

Thanks, Kristen.

This explains my consternation at finding that both
Frank Saunders' and my posts about this recently
were indexed, contradicting what we were saying...

I was having to revise my hypothesis about only cross-posted
messages being indexed in here... ; )

However, not having existing content indexed after all this time
is really pretty bad because it means that some references
will be almost impossible to link to. For example, without
a search and without a direct conversion from Message-ID
to URL sometimes the only feasible method of finding a
web reference to cite is to do a binary search through the
web interface's pages looking for a match on a (PDT timezone
converted) timestamp which fits within the page--at which
point you can then do a Ctrl-F find for Subject. Notice that
in order to do this you must know the timestamp of the
original post, not the particular post a find using your
newsreader might have discovered. Fortunately all the
messages posted so far are still archived by the msnews
server but if the standard 90 day retention policy is followed
eventually this will be impossible as old opening posts
are aged off the server and their timestamps lost.

I guess all we need is a new build to start discussing. <eg>
Then all topics of interest will have to be renewed
or safely dropped and forgotten
