When did the problem start? WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3? IE version?

When did the problem start? WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3? IE version? If you
disable the third-party firewall *and* enable the Windows Firewall, does the
behavior persist?

I am having the same problem, XP Media, IE7, also started Monday. Today
Google sent me an email with a password change link and I was able to log in
once when I changed the password, then no more logging in.

I am also getting windows update telling me my virus protection may be out
of date *false* and also cannot log into Amazon because it thinks cookies are
disabled. These are the first problems I have ever had using IE7, and I'm
bummed.

[To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.]

You do NOT want the Windows Firewall and a third-party firewall enabled.
One, only.

Major, please begin a new thread in WinXP General newsgroup about the
problem with Security Center (not windows update) reporting that your virus
defs may be outdated. Thanks.

IE and gmail

Gordon posted on Thursday, May 15, 2008 3:31 AM

I suspect that that "link" was NOT from Googlemail. I have had two Gmail
accounts for some years now and I have NEVER received an email from them
with such a link.

You've been hacked.

You need to contact Gmail immediately and get them to re-set your password
(to something other than the original) and to do a FULL virus and spyware
scan of your machine.

IE and gmail

WCSTech posted on Friday, May 16, 2008 9:34 PM

IE has stopped opening gmail. On all our Windows computers we get the
message "page cannot be displayed". We have typed gmail.com and tried
the link at Google for mail--neither works.

Initially I thought it was our firewall, but that isn't it as the
request never even gets to the firewall, and I can open gmail from
Macs. Also, it is a IE message, not the firewall message. This just
started a couple days ago. Prior to that it was fine. And it is
consistent across all our Windows XP machines.

Any ideas?

XP SP2, IE 7 (I think, I'll have to double check tomorrow).

XP SP2, IE 7 (I think, I'll have to double check tomorrow). I
suspected the firewall because it started Monday afternoon and I had
been adjusting the firewall Monday morning. I have not tried
disabling the firewall *but* the Windows Firewall is enabled and
always has been. I disabled the Windows firewall, and it still didn't
work. The third-party firewall log doesn't even show that the page
was requested so I suspect the request never even gets that far. It
is almost like IE is just throwing this message up there as there is
no wait indicating it requested the page over the network. But then
it doesn't make sense that all our Windows machines do it.
