Securing my WSS 3.0 site for external users - SharePoint Newbie

16-Jun-08 12:05:18
I'm curious as to how others are securing their site for limited external
users. Currently my WSS 3.0 companyweb site is available to all employees
internally. I want to secure this website to a limited number of employees
for external access only.

If it's companyweb it's SBS 2003 which has different requirements.

The person already stated that it was WSS 3.0 (which is not installed by
default with SBS 2003, so I'm guessing this person is in the right place).

'SharePoint Newbie' you can create what is called a 'Site Extension' of your
existing site and publish the same content over and SSL based connection.
On this page
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc288609(TechNet.10).aspx) you
will probably be interested in the section titled 'Extending an existing Web
Application'.

If he still has companyweb as he wrote, he must have done the SBS 2003
*only* side-by-side installation which keeps WSS 2.0 (and companyweb)
and adds WSS 3.0. The resulting setup installation is strictly SBS 2003
only.

If he has removed his original WSS 2.0 and replaced it with WSS 3.0
using our standard (Win Server 2003) installation, he would no longer
have companyweb.

Is my logic clear now?

Should have been "setup" or "installation" but not both. Apologies.

Ryan,
Thanks for your input and support. I've seen this guy Mike Walsh around here
in this NG and it appears all he has to offer is to tell people there in the
wrong NG. Appears that is his job because I really haven't seen him offering
any help or support to those who are seeking. It seems it is more impoertant
to him to tell you you're in the wrong NG than to offer any kind of help.
This pertains strictly to WSS 3.0 and just because I have a WSS 2.0 site and
I do use SBS I don't think it is an SBS issue. Personally mike if you can't
offer any help or input please keep you comments to yourself. People come to
NG's seeking assistance and not directions. As you can see I did get some
valuable input here from Ryan.

I still say that your environment which is the result of a SBS 2003 ONLY
upgrade is not identical to any Windows Server 2003 based WSS 3.0
installation and that therefore you should be posting to the SBS newsgroup.

In this case your problem (if the answer you got here works for you) is
common to both environments but it won't always be so. Sometimes it will
be a SBS only question and we'll be wasting our time here trying to
answer it.

You are wrong mike because this is not an upgrade of WSS 2.0 to WSS 3.0. It
is a side by side installation of WSS 3.0. FYI. I've posted Sharepoint
questions in the SBS NG before and others have suggested I post it here.
That said it is real annoying to read your comments about not being in the
correct NG so please if you can't offer any valuable input just let it go by
you and let others decide if they should answer it or not.

I said "side-by-side" in my earlier message in this thread.

Only the SBS 2003 implementation has the "side-by-side" method. Server
installations use "gradual" if they want (standard) WSS 2.0 temporarily
available alongside WSS 3.0. This is similar to "side-by-side" but is
not the same.

But we are both beginning to get boring to everyone else, I suspect.
