Virtualisation of a w2k3 server - lyje

Hi,

We have a w2k3 std member server (ML370 G5, 2Gb RAM) on a domain network. We
are looking into utilising virtualisation to install a terminal server on the
network.

My questions are:

1. Can it be done?
2. If so, can someone be kind enough to point me in the right direction
please?

another server just to do the terminal services. Am I right in thinking I
need to install VMware Server software then say Windows 2008 std and then
terminal server?

Which VM software is better to use, Microsoft or VM?

The server is about a year old, HP ML370 G5 quad xeon with 2Gb ram. We will
need to bump this up to say 6Gb?

There will only be a maximum of 5 users who will use it to access Sage CRM
which is what the physical server currently does. The five sales reps will
partly access the Sage using a remote SSL VPN link into the terminal server
from home.

I agree, David. Virtualization is fine, but it does not seem the best
solution here.

I think VMWare GSX and Virtual Server are both good, you won't be able
to use ESX Server as this has its own OS (and costs money) so you'd
have to lose the underlying Operating System. Just be aware that
Microsoft Virtual Server only supports 32bit guest Operating Systems.

You mention upgrading to 6gb RAM this wont be possible as you are
running Windows Standard which has a max RAM of 4gb

You will also need to buy a server licence for the Windows 2003
operating system you install onto the Virtual Machine.

VMWare Server is free and can be installed ontop of this Server into
which you can then install Windows 2003 Standard (which you have to
buy) and then configure it for Terminal Services (which you will have
to activate and purchase Terminal Services licences for also).

Perhaps you could consider installing Terminal Services onto the
existing Server directly? Or is there security concerns about this?
