New tab - very slow to open

M posted on Monday, December 15, 2008 6:43 PM

Hi,
recently I've found problem with opening a new tab in IE8 Beta 2. It is very
very slow. It takes about 5 seconds to open it. Problem appears only if I
want to open a new tab manually, if I open new tab by clicking on hyperlink
then there is no problem. I was trying to disable all add-ons but it did not
help. Later on I have found out that I can bypass this problem by removing
About:Tabs welcome page by setting it to blank page in Tabbed Browsing
Setting. Then it again works without any problem. I think something wrong had
to happen with About:Tabs page, I think problem started after last
installation of patches by Windows Update. Can someone confirm it, or do you
know where can be a problem?

Thanks

Hi MK and mm.

Do you have the AOL Holiday toolbar installed. It has an about:tabs hijack
that redirects to their web site and slows the browser down.
(Yes another addon vendor has released a shoddy product).

Regards.

Hi MM,I am just downloading and installing the SearchPerks toolbar now.

Hi MM,

I am just downloading and installing the SearchPerks toolbar now. This is
an extract from the license agreement.

The software records and sends to Microsoft the number of web Searches you
do each day on different search engines; the types of Searches you complete,
such as for news or images; and the number of online ads you click on. It
also sends your Internet protocol address, the type of operating system, the
language code of the operating system, the version of Internet Explorer, the
version of the Perk Counter software you are using, and information about
the browser you are using as well as which search toolbars, if any, are
installed on the computer. The software also may collect information
regarding the way you enter search queries for fraud detection purposes. The
software does not record the search terms you use, the results you receive
or the content of the ads you click on.

Each time this software reports the above information to Microsoft, it
checks for updates to the way it counts Searches. If the software finds an
available update, it will automatically download and install it. By
installing the software, you consent to the transmission of this information
and the download and installation of these updates. The Perk Counter may
also detect various applications or software that you have installed that
may be used in connection with the Perk Counter and the Promotion that may
violate the Terms.

Have you tried running IE8 with this Toolbar Addon disabled? Because this
toolbar "calls home", I am suspicious about it suitability with IE8 Beta 2.
Addons that automatically check for updates will also slow your browser
right down

There is a beta update of the Live toolbar from download.live.com/toolbar .
I have found this to be better suited to IE8 than the previous version of
the Live toolbar.

Typical.... the toolbar won't install on my Vista x86. Do you really need
this addon?

Regards.

Hi MM,Yep, IE7 Pro has some issues with IE8 and 7.

Hi MM,

Yep, IE7 Pro has some issues with IE8 and 7. I have it installed, but
disabled, and I think I only have some of its functions turned on.

You have to realize that IE8 is Beta, and there have been many issues
reported that can be traced back to an incompatible addon. It is best, when
testing IE8, that you do so without any other influencing factors.

Thanks for the feedback MK.

Thanks for the feedback MK. There is no-other reason for slow performance
other than incompatible addons. I can not quantify it but my impressions are
that slow tab performance has not been a frequent post. On my Vista x86 SP 1
with 8Gb ram IE8 (and everything else) screams.

You could try having a look at your cache settings. When you install IE8 it
resets some of the common settings. These may have been changed from what
you had previously set.

hi,thanks again. I uninstalled IE8 but I have same problem even in IE7.

hi,

thanks again. I uninstalled IE8 but I have same problem even in IE7. It
could be there for some time, because I have found out that this "slow"
problem is always related with calling of some htm file from ieframe.dll.

If I enter to address bar res://ieframe.dll/tabswelcome.htm then it takes
very long time until I get the page and IE is responding again. (about 5
seconds) It's same also for any other page from this dll like
res://ieframe.dll/securityatrisk.htm etc. On the other hand
res://mshtml.dll/blank.htm is fast however it is different library
mshtml.dll.

I found that this problem is also reported here:

Hello,

I have found that this problem is related with ieframe.dll.
Everytime any htm file from this library is called, like tabswelcome.htm,
securityatrisk.htm etc, then IE hnags for about 5 seconds.

On the other hand opening of file from mshtml.dll is fast. (blank.htm)

I unistalled IE8 and I have this problem also in IE7.
Do you have any idea where should I look?
Thanks

Hi MK,The problem is definitely caused by a Addon Toolbar or Browser Helper.

Hi MK,

The problem is definitely caused by a Addon Toolbar or Browser Helper.

Try running IE7/8 in no-Addons mode.

see the post here that you referred to -

This worked wonderfully, my tabs would take ~8 secs to load, instantaneous now.

Hi Hendrick,Can you post back with details of that addon?

Hi Hendrick,

Can you post back with details of that addon?

Open the IE Addons manager (Tools>Manage Addons). Select "All Addons" from
the View dropdown and find the Addon in the listing. Double click on the
item to display its Properties, Click the 'Copy' button, then paste the
results into a new message window for this thread.
