Upgrade 2003 SP2 to R2 - SEgerto

16-Dec-08 02:11:02
We would like to upgrade our servers from Windows 2003 Standard SP2 to
Windows 2003 Standard R2. The reason for the upgrade is to take advantage of
the management features in R2. I have a few questions but let me first
describe our setup.

We have one doman(domain.local), and two sites (NY and NJ).

NY
VMWare Server 1=	Domain Controller
VMWare Server 2=	Domain Controller and Print Server
VMWare Server 3=	Member Server running as a file server.

NJ
VMWare Server 4=	Domain Controller
VMWare Server 5=	Domain Controller and Print Server
VMWare Server 6=	Member Server running as a file server.

NJ is also the Disaster Recovery site for NY. Data on the file server in NY
is being replicated to the file server in NJ using a product called Double
Take.

All servers are running Windows 2003 Standard SP2.

Questions

1. Not sure if we understand the licensing. When we look at our License
Details within Microsoft eOpen online, it shows that we purchased 6 Microsoft
Windows Server Standard 2003 R2 Single OPEN NO Level licenses. When we go
into the Details of this order by referencing the Authorization number and
look at the Product Key; It shows product keys for:
Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 Ed,
Windows Server 2003,
Windows Server 2003 x64 Ed,
Windows Server 2003 R2 x32 Ed.
Each Product Key is different. Does this mean that we purchased 6 licenses
for Windows 2003 Standard and that we can use whichever of the four version
we wish on each server?

2. It looks to me as if we used the Windows Server 2003 on all 6 servers and
its Product Key. I not sure if im understanding the instructions for the
install. From what I'm reading, all we need to do to upgraded to R2 is
install the Windows Server 2003 R2 CD2. It states that CD2 must be the same
SKU as what is currently installed. (A) When they refer to SKU, do they mean
the version; as in Standard or Enterprise? We are currently running standard
and plan to go to R2 standard. (B) Then they state that the Windows Server
2003 R2 product key must match the channel that is currently installed. This
is where they really got me and why i explained what the licensing looks like
above. Since the licenses reflect the way they do above, does that mean the
Product Keys for each version above are within the same channel and therefore
match? or must the Product keys be Identical. (C) If they are within the same
channel, when i install R2 CD2; do i used the product key for R2 even though
it is a different product key that i used for the original install of Windows
Server 2003?

Thanks in Advance,
Shannon
